The work of printmakers from India, many who have never exhibited in the United States before, is now on display at the Crossroads Gallery at St. Petersburg College’s Clearwater campus.

“Show Stopper: Impressions from the South East” features a variety of printmaking techniques such as lithography and intaglio while exploring metaphors to represent ideas of life, afterlife and rebirth, the ideas of deconstructing space, language, identity and spirituality. While the themes are expansive, they bring together in a common space artists from diverse backgrounds across India.

More than 35 works are on exhibit at the gallery.

Ina Kaur, assistant professor and printmaking instructor at The University of Tampa, is the exhibit’s curator. Born in India, Kaur’s goal for the exhibit began with a vision to bring well-established young Indian printmakers to the United States. She has created a grouping of outstanding artworks that now are available to a new audience. Kaur also has work featured in the exhibit.

“I have been involved in establishing the connections between America, where I choose to live, and India—the country where I was born,” Kaur said in statement about the exhibit. “I am always seeking opportunities for collaborative cooperation and potential exchange of ideas. I strive for opportunities to indulge in a discourse of art, including its criticism, appreciation and theoretical context.”

Jonathan Barnes, academic chair for humanities and fine arts, said he was astounded by the caliber of the work.

One of the artists whose work is displayed is Anupam Sud, who has prints in the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. among others. Other artists are Vijay Bagodi, Ananda M. Banerji, Rakesh Bani, Kanchan Chander, Rajan S. Fulari, Hanuman R. Kambli, Jaya Kumar, Kavita Nayar, Kavita Shah and Subhakar Tadi.

The free exhibit runs through Feb. 7 at the gallery at 2465 Drew St., Clearwater. The museum is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A reception is scheduled for Jan. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be a workshop and lecture by Kaur on Jan. 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
