30 Guns, Body Armor, Drugs Taken From St. Pete Home

Officials found 30 firearms, including a fully automatic rifle, two sawed-off shotguns and handguns, along with survival gear, cocaine and marijuana at a tattoo shop owner's home in St. Petersburg on Thursday.

Jason Deon Thomas, 31, of St. Petersburg was arrested Thursday morning after police say they found 30 guns, drugs, survival gear and cash inside his home in the 2200 block of 37th St. N.

The St. Petersburg Police Department and The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), conducted a joint investigation after receiving a tip about Thomas allegedly selling drugs.

Investigators found 30 guns, including a fully automatic rifle, two sawed-off shotguns, several assault weapons, semi-automatic rifles and handguns, according to a news release.

Thomas' business, JT's The Perfect Tattoo Shop on 34th Street North, was also searched but only boxes of ammunition were found.

Police also took possession of one suppressor, numerous C- magazines (each one holds one-hundred rounds of ammunition), several bullet resistant vests, one Kevlar body suit, including kneepads and bullet-resistant armbands. They also recovered bullet-resistant helmets and gas masks, numerous survival knives, bug out bags, survival books, and several large boxes of ammunition.

According to the police report, 9.5 grams of powder cocaine, 216 grams of marijuana and $7,390.00 in cash was also recovered.

"This is a significant arrest that began with a tip from a concerned citizen. This case clearly reinforces the notion that law enforcement needs the public's support to get drug dealers and illegal firearms off the street," said St. Petersburg Police Chief Chuck Harmon in a news release.

Thomas has been charged federally and made his initial appearance in federal court this afternoon, in Tampa, according to St. Petersburg Police.

According to jail records, Thomas is a convicted felon. In 2001, he was charged with Armed Trafficking MDMA, Trafficking in Phenethylamines, Felony Possession of Marijuana and Possession of LSD. In 2012, he was charged with Possession of Marijuana over 20 grams.

With all due respect, Dharma, could you please edit before posting? Your text is often rambling and confusing to the point of nonsense. Law abiding citizens have a constitutional right to bear arms (like the animal, not the naked kegger.) This person is a convicted felon, prohibited by law, from possessing any kind of firearm. No one is permitted to posess illegal drugs.I am happy that this unit of SPPD is doing a fine job. Now, I hope they will solve the 103 murder cases that remain unsolved in our little town.

I really cannot believe that you folks do not understand what Dharma is saying. He is confused because he believes that a person is protected by the 2nd amendment . He is asking why the perp was not protected by the second amendment . He wants to know if it is because the perp had too many guns for one person to own, were his rights trampled on, and that his prior record for possession was more serious in his prior arrest than the perp is being charged with now.He is also saying that the Police are not explaining as to why the perp is being arrested, because he believes his rights should be protected under the second amendment. Very clear to me. Thank You very good.

Dharma, please go gack to Greg. The man is a convicted felon so he can't have firearms.
It's ''TOO'' many not ''to'' and if he has ''bare'' arms instead of the right to ''bear'' arms, who cares. Right?
Other than a couple dozen captilization, spelling and punctuation errors, You seem to have made your point.

The guy was a convicted felon. He had no right to bear arms nor drugs. In other words, he had absolutly no right have any guns, bullets, silencers, full automatic or sawed-off shotguns. He forfitted those rights in 2001 when he was busted for transporting dope. A good bust and hopefully this clown won't see the streets ever again.

As a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, he will be facing a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison. I guess that's not OK with you, though. Better to just leave this guy alone to continue dealing drugs while in possession of multiple firearms and assorted assault gear and paraphernalia, right?

Not even remotely possible he owned these legally. You need a class three to own anything automatic and sawed offs are WAY against the law for anyone to possess. Not sure how the laws are here as far as the vests but I am pretty sure those aren't legal as well.

It is the criminals who give the bad name to us law abiding citizens! Very rarely if ever (I didn't say never) does law abiding citizens commit criminal acts with their firearms! ARE THERE MANY MORE OF YOU IDIOTS WHO CAN'T/DON'T COMPREHEND THIS? If there is you are a danger/menace to society if you all never touch a firearm!

Every gun he illegaly possesed started out legal somewhere. Can they be traced backward to find where the breakdown between legal & illegal occured? Who sold him these weapons? Or, who was careless enough to leave them where they could be stolen, etc?

@Another...This has been my contention since day one. I am retired Law Enforcement and my wife is still LE. I have my CCW permit and I carry every day everywhere I go. We have guns, we have children, we have no problems with that situation. People selling, trading, or giving their guns to people should be held accountable for doing so. In my opinion, by charging them as a principal accessory to any crimes comitted. Likewise, If you do not SECURE your weapons when you are not carrying them and they fall into the wrong hands you should be held accountable. By SECURE, I mean a locked gun safe that only you can unlock and open. As a Deputy Sheriff, I had a gun lockbox welded in my trunk. That was the ONLY exception. If you are away on vacation, at work, in the shower, and your weapons are stolen you will, upon discovering the theft, be able to show the police that you had done everything possible to responsibly own and thus secure your weapons. Your dresser drawer, a glass gun case, your glove compartment ARE NOT SECURE.

Every gun which is owned by a felon has been obtained illegally. The problem I have with the gun lobby is they say the crimes are all commited by illegal guns so we don't need to cut down on the number of LEGAL guns without admitting that nearly EVERY one of those guns was once LEGAL. You can't arm a person legally then as soon as that person commits an illegal act say it was commited by an illegal gun. The first illegal use of that gun was commited by a legal gun owner.

@ Another Poetlake- Send that poem to POTUS for support of his anti gun plan.
From the manufacturer firearms travel to the distributors who ship them to FFLs. Legit FFLs, transfer the weapons to customers. What happens after that transfer is the focus of your question. When a weapon is "lost/stolen," agencies who want to know, trace the paper trail, from buyer to FFL and back to the source. How do you protect someone from a homicidal maniac like in Connecticut, who committed matricide to get his weapons? Currently there is no enforced law against "Stupid" who leaves his things in the car, or in a poorly constructed cabinet ripe for theft. The weapons of Mr. Thomas were, doubtless, part of the 39.5% of crime guns acquired from friends and family, the 37% from the street, or the 10% acquired from theft. Please don't blame the "gunshow loopholes" as they provide about 1.9% of crime guns. About 13% come from straw purchases at dealers. These facts are from the Department of Justice.Law enforcement agencies nationwide are undermanned and underfinanced. They do the best they can with the resources available. Ever hear about filing off the serial numbers, Sir? criminals operate without regard for anything!

if the guns are secured (like a locked gunsafe) , how does one get to them quickly if the need arises - like in the case of a break-in. then there is the flip side, how do you not keep them locked up, if you have young children at home.

Donna,

Congress funds the agencies responsible for law enforcement & over the years has allowed loopholes to become part of their gun bills in attempt to assuage the pro/anti gun sides at the same time. A tricky game but they pulled it off for the most part & have made the one side feel that laws were passed while making the other side feel the laws were ineffective. Lobbyists & politicians have contributed greatly to this situation. Also, if only .05% of illegal gun usage starts at a gun show loophole or any where else it is .05% too many.

Good, go after the people that have these illegal weapons, fully automatic, sawed off shotguns, etc. and leave the legal honest gun owners alone. A sawed off shotgun is what started the Ruby Ridge incident with Randy Weaver and the BATF when they shot and killed Vikki Weaver while she was holding her infant baby and shot and killed her teenage son the day before. This is what legal gun owners are affraid of, gov. egencies like the BATF coming in with guns blazing shooting first and asking questions later.

Convicted felon in poession, full auto, and sawed off's? that should be enough to lock him up forever but id bet there will be a plea and reduced charges, 10 yrs ,maybe? thats why criminals ignore laws they know in the so called interest of a sure conviction and saving the cost of a trial he will get off easy,, and why the panic over body armor? that is just media hype,,,

Define a gun nut and tell me what sort of control you think will work. The gun laws/control worked in CT. The perp tried to get a gun legally and decided not to wait for the back round check so he stole them. If a criminal wants a gun, he/she will get a gun. Same as drugs and anything else. Calling legal gun owners 'gun nuts' is as nuts as the person labeling them in this way(Jackass comes to mind too). I can't wait to hear what you consider to be a 'gun nut'. So, us 'gun nuts' who never commit crimes/gun crimes are nuts and scary but you have no similar fear of those who possess them illegally and run the streets like rogue Rambo with dope packs to sell?
