Dan Wheldon Roadway Dedication Today
At the corner of Bayshore Drive and Albert Whitted Park, a roadway will be dedicated to the late Dan Wheldon today.
A brief roadway dedication ceremony in honor of Dan Wheldon will be held at noon today at the corner of Bayshore Drive and Albert Whitted Park.
Wheldon died suddenly last year during a horrific 15-care pileup during a race in Las Vegas on Oct 16, 2011.
St. Petersburg City Council, along with officials from the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, IndyCar Series and American Honda Motor Company, will be present to make brief comments and dedicate the roadway in Wheldon's honor.
The corner dedicated to Wheldon Wednesday is turn No. 10 during this month's Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
Wheldon stormed the racing world in 2005, the same year he moved to Old Northeast. The then 26-year-old won the Honda Grand Prix, the Indy 500 and four other races en route to winning the Indy Car Championship.
St. Petersburg honored the driver this year by declaring June 7 Dan Wheldon Day.
“Being born and raised in England … it’s bleak, it’s dreary. The community certainly don’t embrace me like you guys,” Wheldon told a crowd at Jannus Live that day. “This is paradise for me, this is absolute paradise.”
The Grand Prix of St. Petersburg runs March 23-25 through downtown St. Pete. Construction began last month on the 1.8 mile, 14-turn course along St. Petersburg's bayfront.

What a wonderful recognition to a great man who won the first Grand Prix here and loved his adopted home.
