Police: Gibbs High Student Brought Gun, Marijuana to School

Two students were found smoking in a concession stand at the athletic fields, according to St. Petersburg Police. A loaded gun was found in one of the student's backpacks.

Two teenage Gibbs High School students have been arrested after a school resource officer investigating a break in at the athletic field concession stand found the two students inside smoking marijuana and carrying a gun.

When authorities searched the first suspect’s backpack Tuesday morning, a loaded .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun was found inside, according to St. Petersburg Police.

The first 16-year-old suspect was arrested and will be charged Tuesday with possession of a firearm on school grounds, carrying a concealed firearm, armed commercial burglary, possession of marijuana and violation of probation, police said.

Within the last year, the teen has been charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell, assault on a school board employee, battery on a law enforcement officer, possession of marijuana and burglary, police said.

Police say the second juvenile suspect, who is 17, is charged with armed commercial burglary, possession of marijuana and trespass on school grounds.

This is news? This is what happens when government takes over education! Empower the teachers! Make the parents responsible! No more nice, nice!

Really, "considering what school it is" ... you're just delusional. This occurs daily at Northeast, Dixie, Pinellas Park, Largo, etc. ... welcome to our kids, 2013. They just didn't get caught. ...the government, empower the teachers, responsible parents ... if you have kids, I can just imagine what they're doing right under your nose.

Was that meant for me Mike? Cause my son has been a principle list student since the 1st grade. He has been IQ tested and hits a 139 score. He plays the French Horn, Violin, Drums, Bass Guitar and the electric Guitar... He has consistently had the best stats on the baseball team he plays on as the starting left handed pitcher. He can keep up with me on an MX track, but not on the tennis court! So how are your darlings doing? BOOOOOOOOM!

No, my kids are in private school just because of stuff like this. If that makes me a racist, so be it. Morons.

My darling graduated three ago. Her IQ tested out @ 168 and she was in the gifted programs since elemenntary school. Honor Roll/Principal List since they started with letter grades (3rd?). Highly valued by all the principals since she brought up the school's average/numbers. Since 3rd grade, she consistently "won" the annual district MIghty Mu (Mu Alpha Theta) math competition, doing high school algebra in elementary school, until she quit competing in middle school out of embarassment of winning annually. Highly involved in student government, homecoming, and starting the Invisible Children group (anti-Ugandy genocide joseph Kony) in the district high schools. Currently wrapping up scholarship @ Ringling School of Art & Design (no, it couldn't be something math related .. darn school that charges more than medical school). Still has teachers that visit her @ her condo, teachers she baby-sits for, and still volunteers with the autistic kids @ her old school. Works full-time and runs a website selling her art work and does commission work. Popular, good-looking, little blonde. So if you want to swing genitals over kids, bring it on. She also beats up boys that play the violin and french horn. BOOM 2 U.

Interesting, how comments are made by those who think they have all the answers to the questions they don't even know. Gibbs has honor students, distinguished grads, an award winning drama department to go along with its troubled past. The young man has a mother that goes to work everyday. She has tried to insure that responsible male influences (Grandparents, Uncles, teachers and other mentors), have been in his live. So how did we end up here? Simple choices, he chose to follow the path of instant reward. The choice was his and now he will suffer the consequences. If I get the chance to talk to him again, I will ask him again with so much support around you why did you make the choices that have brought you to this point?

Both my daughters graduated from Gibbs. Both graduated from USF. Both are in grad school now. It is a wonderful school. This could have happened anywhere. Most kids at Gibbs are happy, freindly, genuine, against bulllying, open minded and accepting, as opposed to the passive aggressive laugh out you culture of some Pinellas High Schools (no names but we know who they are).

No, my daughter did bot attend GIbbs. She did go to Baypoint and Thurgood for a period of time. One in an intergrated neighbborhood and the other in a traditional"minority" neighborhood. Her involvement in establishing Invisible Children took her to and established friendships that exist to this day, at all Pinellas schools. Don't paint a school with a broad brush of the neighborhood it is located in. It all comes down to the parents, or lack of. Or as my wife and I like to call them egg donors and sperm donors, who don't have the time of day for their sweethearts. St. Pete High has as many "problems" as does Gibbs.

It's doesn't matter what schools you go to. This can happen anywhere. Remember no one is perfect...
