Deputies: Man Froze Kittens in Sandwich Bags

One kitten is dead and three are at the Emergency Care Center At Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialist in Largo. The suspect has been charged with four counts of animal cruelty.

Eva Mulder was visiting 49-year-old Rodney J. Blanchard at his home when he asked her to get a beer out of the freezer. When she opened the freezer door, she didn't find any beer.

She found four kittens inside, wrapped in individual sandwich bags, on the bottom shelf.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, Mulder tried to get the kittens out of the freezer before they died, when Blanchard allegedly pushed her and forced her out of his home.

Mulder returned home and immediately called authorities.

Pinellas deputies went to Blanchard’s home, at 7570 46th Ave. N., to conduct a welfare check. As deputies approached the freezer, they said they could hear the kittens meow.

Deputies arrested Blanchard and charged him with four counts of animal cruelty and one-count battery for pushing Mulder.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, deputies gathered all four kittens and wrapped them in a blanket to warm them. They were shivering and infested with fleas.

One of the kittens, a female calico, was unresponsive and declared dead. The three others – all orange and white males – were transported to the Emergency Care Center At Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialist in Largo. They are believed to be about six weeks old.

An adult cat was found in the home unharmed. This cat is also in the custody of SPCA.  Two other outdoor cats were found in the vicinity of the home. They were also unharmed.

The question here is:
Why does someone ask another person to get a beer out of the ''freezer''...when there isn't one there...and also when they are doing something this illegal that they certainly would not want to get caught doing?

Something is wrong with this story. It sounds more like both of these people need to be arrested. Not just the man. If something does not sound right, then there is usually a good explanation. It usually means it is not the truth. This woman knows more than she is saying. Whatever is going on here, it sounds like more than just this one man needs to rot in jail. Thank God the other kittens may be OK, but that is terrible about the one that did not make it. Poor thing. Hope they get some pictures up of the survivors and they get good homes.

Amen. Stuff like this makes me reach for my snubby and consider the unthinkable. There ought to be a particular long, slow and painful punishment for sadists like this.

How about we place this guy in a freezer until someone goes looking for a beer in it.

CJ, I believe that the accurate story is the woman came to visit and when she went to the fridge to get a beer she heard the meows coming from the freezer and then he (Rodney) told her what he'd done and when she tried to get to the kittens to release them, he pushed her away and told her to leave and that's when she called the cops. She did all that she could do to save those kittens and I don't think she is involved in this. To me it sounds like this man is a drug addict or mentally disturbed. There is no way any normal person could do this.

Yes...I think you are correct. I just saw the news and this story was on it and it happened more like you said. Good news, though....they had video of the 3 surviving male kittens and the cute little guys looked like they have already put one of thier 13 lives to use. They looked pretty normal and playful...so I thought everyone would like to hear that.

Who should we contact over there in St.Pete to make sure this guy is committed?? Unfortunately we can't execute him (which is what I would do if I were queen!)

This is an acceptable and humane way to euthanize sick kittens, according to my vet. It is painless. However it is not a way to dispose of healthy kittens just because you don't want them.

I do not believe you when you say a vet told you that. No way. Dying by freezing to death would be a terrible way to die. Acceptable? Painless? Torture and suffering ''is'' pain. You are nuts. Golly, ''Lars'', were your ancestors German SS at concentration camps? How can you say such things? Your last sentence hardly gets you off the hook for such a vile comment.
