Pedestrian Killed on Gandy Boulevard

The 24-year-old man was walking in the road at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, when he was struck by a vehicle.

State Police aren't sure why 24-year-old Dale Roberts was walking on Gandy Boulevard after 3 a.m. Saturday.

The 24-year-old, who was not wearing reflective clothing, was struck by a Chevy Blazer. Roberts died at the scene.

Todd M. Parks, 26, of New York told officers he did not see Roberts.

Police say that Parks was eastbound on Gandy Boulevard, just west of the Gandy Bridge, when the accident occurred.

Roberts, who lived in Pinellas Park, was walking in the roadway for unknown reasons. Unable to see the pedestrian in the dark, Parks collided with Roberts, who suffered fatal injuries.

This incident remains under investigation.  Details regarding this incident are subject to change.

We have all seen this much too often - people walking or riding bicycles in the darkness of night without a light or reflective clothing, yet using the street as if others are expected to somehow see them and avoid them before it is too late.

"A majority of the 4,280 pedestrian fatalities in 2010, 68 percent, occurred during the nighttime." http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/811625.pdf

Here's an interesting guide to getting killed while walking after dark:

It is interesting that there are always numerous and intense national headlines and TV shows regarding people getting killed in a mass murder incident or about the 6,500 (total over 10 years) U.S. military deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan. But what do we see every day in the newspapers or on TV about the 40,000+ innocent people killed EVERY YEAR on our streets and highways?

Answer: not a word.
