Who's St. Pete's Person of the Year?

TIME magazine named President Obama their person of the year for the second time. Tell us who you think should win from our town!

On Dec. 19, Time magazine named President Barack Obama their Person of the Year, again!

The magazine invited votes on 40 candidates, including the president, Gabby Douglas and Kim Jong Un. Other options included The Mars Rover and the Higgs Boson Particle, Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, and Apple CEO Tim Cook. But, the president took the title again four years after he first won the award as president-elect in 2008.

But who cares about the same-old, same-old? Who is St Pete’s Person of the Year—the man or woman who, in Timespeak, “most influenced the news this year for better or worse”?

Tell us your pick in the comment section below!

Wengay Newton is my choice for person of the year. He stands out on city city council as a voice for truth and sound decision making.

Darden Rice has worked tirelessly this last year to make St Pete a better place to live for all of us. As a leader in Progress Florida she explained to any group that would have her the specifics of the Affordable Care Act in terms we could all understand. As President of the League of Women Voters in St Pete she has taken the lead on fighting voter suppression. She called out the leaders of Tiger Bay for not including a single female in their panel on old/new media. She partnered with many grassroots groups including Awake Pinellas to fight for the Pinellas Budget Review and testified at hearings with state legislators on redistricting. She is not looking for awards but loves this city.

Hands down Wengay Newton for his true leadership on issues like Red Light Cameras, The Pier, and Youth Employment opportunities.

Wengay Newton, he's the only St. Petersburg council member who actually listens to the will of the people.

+1 for Mr Newton. He seems like the only one on the city council who actually wants to represent the public's interests.

Aaron Dietrich- for his tireless commitment to St Pete through giving residents a greater voice in the city's budget process and advocating for city workers with the Fl. Public Services Union. With Aarons leadership in the Peoples Budget Review, 2012 will be remembered as the most democratic budget process in the citys history.
