1. Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge The 2013 Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge Eastern Regional will be taking over Spa Beach Park Friday and Saturday, May 3-4. According to the city, this annual competition involves 70 dogs competing in five categories (agility, Frisbee, diving dock dogs, Jack Russell hurdle racing, and a dual weave course racing. While most of the dogs are invited, there is an opportunity for the public to bring man's best friend to strut his stuff in the Frisbee and diving dog categories. 2. 1. St. Anthony's Triathlon Sunday, April 28, from 7 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., more than 4,000 triathletes are registered for the 1.5K Swim-40K Bike-10K Run competition. The will be competing for a portion of the $65,000 prize purse. The three-day event weekend begins Friday with a sports and fitness expo. The Meek & Mighty Triathlon, a short distance race for youths ages 7-14 and novice adults, as well as the sports and fitness expo is Saturday, April 27; and the St. Anthony's Triathlon is on Sunday. 2. Aquarium officials announced Tuesday that construction would begin on the Secrets of the Sea Aquarium (formally the pier aquarium), which will be located at Gulf Boulevard and 129th Avenue in John's Pass.
Madeira Beach and John's Pass will have a new anchor tenant in November when the Secrets of the Sea Marine Exploration Center and Aquarium opens at Gulf Boulevard and 129th Avenue in John's Pass. After being located in the St. Petersburg Pier since 1988, the aquarium decided in 2011 that Madeira Beach would be its next home. The new $4 million facility will house interactive exhibits, tanks and state of the art technology in the two-story, 13,500-square-foot building. One of the main attractions that will be on display at the aquarium is possible due to a partnership the aquarium has with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Since 2008 Record Store Day has been helping vinyl make a comeback.
Thousands of music fans across the country will be lining up outside record stores Saturday, April 20, for the 6th annual Record Store Day. On Record Store Day musicians and bands release limited edition records, singles and memorabilia. This year's Record Store Day ambassador is White Stripes, The Dead Weather and Raconteurs front man Jack White. In St. Petersburg you can participate in Record Store Day at Daddy Kool Records and Bananas Music. 1. Rays vs. Oakland Athletics After a lengthily road trip, the Tampa Bay Rays will finally be back at Tropicana Field this weekend to take on the Oakland Athletics. The games on Friday and Saturday start at 7:10 p.m. and Sunday at 1:40 p.m. On Saturday, the first 15,000 fans will receive a MLB Network drawstring bag. 1. Tampa Bay Blues Festival Come out to the Vinoy Park this weekend to experience the blues with the Tampa Bay Blues Festival. The three-day festival, April 12-14, features more than a dozen artists including Johnny Lang, Tab Benoit and Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue. Music begins at 12:30 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m. each night. Tickets are $40 for each day or you can buy a three-day pass for $100. Cash only. 2. 'Call Me Maybe' pop sensation Carly Rae Jepsen and country start Martine McBride have been announced as performers for the Rays 2013 Summer Concert Series. Also included in the series are the Imagination Movers, Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice and 80s musician Kenny Loggins. Loggins is famous for the theme songs from the 80s hits of Caddyshack, Footloose and Top Gun's "Danger Zone." Each concert is free with the purchase of that date's game ticket and will begin following the conclusion of that date's game. St. Pete singing sensation Bailey Coats recorded her cover of the Amy Winehouse song at an area studio. A video was made of her singing.
This Vimeo video of Bailey Coats recording "Back to Black" at Full Wave Sound Studios, 430 Patricia Ave., was posted in September 2012. Bailey is a 15-year-old singing sensation and student at St. Petersburg High School, where she is enrolled in the rigorous IB program. If you like her singing, check out her Facebook Page.
