New Coffee Shop Brewing on Central Avenue

The revitalization of Central Avenue continues as Genaro Coffee Co. opens.

The good news keeps coming for the Central Avenue corridor in the Edge Business District and the Grand Central District as food and drink options continue to increase.  Genaro Coffee Co. opened this week at 1047 Central Ave. near Tropicana Field.  "We are definitely about community," said co-owner Preston Johnson. "We don’t want to come here, set up shop and stick our hands out and just say ‘come buy our coffee.' We want to become part of this community." Genaro had its soft opening Monday and will have its grand opening May 18. The coffee shop menu will feature wraps, salads, paninis, croissants, bagels and pastries. After its grand opening, Genaro will have local art shows, poetry nights, Latin night and live entertainment.  Genaro …

Yay! Don't hate me because I'm from Seattle, but...I miss Seattle coffee houses, so any community-minded coffee house makes me happy. My two favorites are Steam on St. Pete Beach and Indian Rocks Coffee, but Central is a lot closer!   more ›

Act Kindly and Win a Free Breakfast Sandwich

McDonald's unconventional promotion for the new low-cal Egg White McMuffin is challenging customers to act kindly, then tweet about it.

Kindness may be it's own reward, but it's nice to get a token of appreciation, too. That seems to be the message behind the unusual social media promotion by McDonald's, which offers customers a coupon for an Egg White Delight McMuffin when they perform an act of kindness – and tell the world about it. Of course, they have to go to Twitter.com and tweet @McDTampaBay to say what that kind act was and include the tag, #BeDelightful. McDonald's "Be Delightful" campaign runs through the month of May. Here are just some of the random acts of kindness tweeted across Tampa Bay by this offer of a free Egg White Delight. Of course, this contest runs on the honor system: Here are some nearby McDonald's for redeeming those coupons: 1.) McDonald's, …

Does Snell Isle Need a Gated Community?

The micro-gated community will feature just four homes, with the starting price at $1.5 million.

In the exclusive Snell Isle community, many of the homes themselves are gated. Nevertheless, a micro-gated community called Coffee Pot Estates is planned for Snell Isle, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Three of the four house lots already are "reserved," according to the developer. Located at 526 Monterey Blvd. NE, the custom-built homes should fit in just fine, alongside the million-dollar-plus manses on Snell Isle. Selling prices will run from $1.5 million to $2.3 million, the Tampa Bay Times is reporting. Real estate agent Bonnie Strickland of Re/Max Metro, and her husband, Tom, bought the property where the homes will be built, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Strickland told the Tampa Bay Times that she sees this development in the…

"Gated Community" is an oxymoron. Many people simply do not feel secure without this added precaution. This is unfortunate and seems to be overkill in that neighborhood, but the prevailing paranoia dictates the market and theres a seat for every ass.   more ›

Residents Ready for Change Along 34th Street South Corridor

The plan will be formalized throughout 2013 with council voting on the plan in December. Implementation of the 34th Street Corridor plan is scheduled to start in early 2014.

More than a 200 residents and business owners turned out Tuesday night to St. Petersburg College to kick off the process to revitalize 34th Street South from 30th Avenue to 54th Avenue South. "This is probably the biggest turnout of any groups of associations to talk about a corridor plan," Mayor Bill Foster said Tuesday night. "What this tells me is that it's long overdue." Council chair Karl Nurse said the revitalization plans needs create businesses that will allow residents south of Central to spend their money in the neighborhood they live in.  "I moved to the south side about 22 years ago. I remember the first thing I realized, 'it’s hard to spend money here,' " Nurse said. "Can you buy a pair of socks, a shirt, groceries? Can you go…

Wow, lots frustration shown here and with some of this I can certainly identify. The anger and pessimism is another thing entirely. That I just don’t get. For those that work to improve everyone’s lot, may I suggest encouragement instead? All worthwhile advancements face challenges and skepticism and we know the effort will take years before the vision that is being developed will be even …   more ›

Construction to Begin on Secrets of the Sea Aquarium

Aquarium officials announced Tuesday that construction would begin on the Secrets of the Sea Aquarium (formally the pier aquarium), which will be located at Gulf Boulevard and 129th Avenue in John's Pass.

Madeira Beach and John's Pass will have a new anchor tenant in November when the Secrets of the Sea Marine Exploration Center and Aquarium opens at Gulf Boulevard and 129th Avenue in John's Pass.  After being located in the St. Petersburg Pier since 1988, the aquarium decided in 2011 that Madeira Beach would be its next home.  The new $4 million facility will house interactive exhibits, tanks and state of the art technology in the two-story, 13,500-square-foot building.  One of the main attractions that will be on display at the aquarium is possible due to a partnership the aquarium has with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The two have partnered to create the "Science on a Sphere." "This dramatic 6' diameter globe …
