A campaign fundraiser for Darden Rice was held Tuesday night at Cassis in downtown St. Petersburg.
District 4 City Council candidate Darden Rice spoke Tuesday night at Cassis in downtown St. Petersburg about one of her first experiences in politics 21 years ago. She recalled reaching out to newly elected Florida state legislator Charlie Crist about an offshore drilling ban. Unable to speak with him, Rice said she left a message thinking she would hear nothing more. To her surprise, however, Crist called her back to thank her for taking the time to call him and say he supported banning offshore drilling. St. Petersburg City Council Chair Karl Nurse announced Friday that he has filed for re-election for his District 6 seat. “I believe that St. Petersburg is in a moment of great opportunity," Nurse said in a statement Friday. "As the economy comes back, it is critical that we aggressively seek to bring more and better jobs to our community. "Many neighborhoods are a point where they can get much better or worse in the next four years," Nurse continued. A few months ago, Dr. David McKalip and Darden Rice were unsure which city council district they would even be running for, but after the redistricting dust settled, the two campaigns are stepping up fundraising efforts for the District 4 city council seat. A slightly greater percerntage of eligible Hispanic voters – 62.2 percent – turned out to cast ballots in the 2012 presidential election in Florida than white, non-Hispanic voters. And more eligible female voters went to the polls than men. Long time community leader Darden Rice launched her campaign Thursday to run for the open District 4 City Council seat vacated by Leslie Curran. Rice said, “I am running because I believe in making St. Pete Strong. I have a clear vision for the future of our city. It is based on three foundations for the health of the community. It includes ensuring strong businesses and jobs; healthy and vital communities and neighborhoods; and effective city services,” according to a press release. Former State Rep. and City Council member Rick Kriseman filed paperwork Monday to run against Mayor Bill Foster.
Rick Kriseman has announced his candidacy for St. Petersburg Mayor, challenging Mayor Bill Foster. Kriseman, 50, served 12 years in office as a council member in St. Petersburg and as a member of the Florida House. He will oppose Foster, also 50, in November. "I love this city, but I love the potential it has even more," Kriseman said in his announcement video online. Kriseman plans to boost economic development in the city by helping attract businesses, according to the Tampa Bay Times. The Florida secession movement through an online petition has exploded over the course of three days, now surpassing its goal, reaching 30,304 signatures as of Wednesday evening. Patch first reported the Florida secession movement Monday when the petition on the White House's petition website had only 1,343 signatures and the story went viral to the point where 30,304 people have signed supporting the idea of secession, though it's not legally possible. While the presidential election is the only true national referendum, petitions are well and alive. And no, this petitition has nothing to do with the St. Petersburg Pier. Actually, a few folks in Florida are petitioning the President Barack Obama White House to allow Florida to break off from the United States government and become its own nation. Hey, Puerto Rico is waiting to take Florida's place, so no need to change the amount of stars on the flag, so there's that. The Obama White House offers citizens the opportunity to file a petition on its official website. The 2012 election is barely in the books and already Florida politicos are turning their eyes to 2014, especially Democrats hungry to take back the Governor's mansion from the Republicans. The Tampa Bay Times reports that President Barack Obama won the electoral vote in Florida.
Florida finally has a winner in the race for president. The Tampa Bay Times is reporting that President Barack Obama won all 29 electoral votes in the state of Florida. According to the Tampa Bay Times, Obama had 50.01 percent of the vote in Florida to Gov. Mitt Romney's 49.13 percent. According to the Florida Department of Sttate, Obama collected 4,236,032 votes to Romney's 4,162,174.
