February 1st, Florida - The FL13 Special Election is seen as a bellwether to the 2014 election season.  One of the top issues being considered by voters is Immigration Reform. Over a dozen organizers and activists with Awake Pinellas, CIR NOW and SEIU-Florida came together to make over 600 calls to ask voters that support Immigration Reform to commit to voting in the special election on March 11th.

“I’m here to help my neighbors stay focused. Immigration, the separated families and exploited workers, can’t get lost in election sound bytes and tv ads.” -Dave Kovar, an activist and Independent FL13 Voter

Many voters that were called said they supported the idea of Immigration Reform and that they were definitely planning on voting by the March 11 special election.

One of the volunteers was Juan Huapilla, a dreamer and local activist who participated to represent the 11 million people waiting for Congress to act.

“I’m here because I think everyone should be equal.” - Juan Huapilla

Awake Pinellas, CIR NOW and SEIU Florida will continue to reach out to thousands more district voters and let them know which candidates share their values of prioritizing common sense Immigration Reform over ideological politics.

SEIU Florida volunteers to inform Latino voters about Alex Sink's support of a pathway to citizenship. Awake Pinellas and CIR NOW activists told Latino voters about how Alex Sink and Lucas Overby have publicly announced support for Comprehensive Immigration Reform with a pathway to citizenship. The third candidate in the race, David Jolly has said publicly that he does not support the bipartisan bill which passed the Senate.

“And for good reason: when people come here to fulfill their dreams – to study, invent, and contribute to our culture – they make our country a more attractive place for businesses to locate and create jobs for everyone. So let’s get immigration reform done this year.” President Obama, State of the Union 2014
