Area Publix Stores Recall Cake Products

The recall affects 45 different products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Publix customers imay want to check the ID numbers on any cake products purchased from the store bakery.

The grocery chain issued a recall on 45 different products distributed between Nov. 11 and Nov. 15 by Maplehurst, a private bakery supplier.

According to a media release, there is a concern about a potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. This bacteria causes an illness that can be serious and even fatal in young children, elderly people and those with compromised immune systems.

“While the product is no longer available on store shelves, we have issued a voluntary recall because of our commitment to food safety and to advise our customers who may still have this product at home,” said Maria Brous, Publix media and community relations director. “No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the 7” chocolate layer cake used to make these desserts.”

Symptoms of Listeria infection include high fever, headache, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. The condition can cause miscarriage and still birth among pregnant women. For more information on the condition, visit the Centers for Disease Control online.

Publix is offering customers who have purchased any of the recalled products a full refund at their local stores. Anyone wanting more information can contact Publix’s Customer Care Center at 1-800-242-1227, or the can visit the store’s website.
