Happy Foursquare Day: Where To Go To Get Deals

Running errands, grabbing lunch or catching up with friends has never been more useful. Today marks the third annual Foursquare Day.

The social media application, largely used on phones, allows users to "check-in" at various locations around town. Going to Starbucks? Check-in. Getting a pedicure at your favorite spa? Check-in.

The more times you check in at a location, the more status you receive. So after a number of times checking in, you earn badges and can even become "mayor" of a certain location.

But on today, businesses around the country are giving "check-iners" an extra boost by offering specials and discounts.

Foursquare Day was the brainchild of Westchase optometrist Nate Bonilla-Warford. He created the holiday from his Twitter page two years ago and it's grown in popularity ever since.

Last year, New York City's Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced April 16 would officially be Foursquare Day in the city. In St. Petersburg, Foursquare Day has its own loyal following. Here's a list of Foursquare Day events and discounts you can get for checking-in today:
