Local Developer to Buy Baywalk

According to reports, Treasure Island developer Bill Edwards will buy the nearly empty complex.

ST. PETERSBURG – Treasure Island developer Bill Edwards, who recently won the contract to manage the city's Mahaffey Theater, is poised to take over Baywalk, according to news reports.

Tampabay.com reported that Edwards is set to close Sept. 15 on the nearly vacant complex, located in downtown St. Petersburg.

When the complex opened 11 years ago, it was considered to be an important cog in the city's downtown revivial. But today, it is mostly empty, with only the , a restaurant and a couple stores.

Edwards did not reveal specific plans for the complex, according to the reports. However, he did say he was looking to bring in national chains and to make the complex more "user friendly."

Edwards, 66, is the CEO of Mortgage Investors Corp, and The Club at Treasure Island. He also runs a music production company that recently won the city's contract to manage the Mahaffey Theater.
