RNC Coming to the Trop?

The Republican National Convention is slated to host a kick-off party on Aug. 26 at Tropicana Field, according to the Tampa Tribune.

As the Republican and Democratic parties are now preparing for a Gov. Mitt Romney vs. President Barack Obama election in November, the Tampa Bay area is preparing for the Republican National Convention. 

From Aug. 27 - 30, Romney and the Republican Party will be center stage at the 2012 RNC. While the 2012 RNC is scheduled to be in Tampa, according to the Tampa Tribune, St. Petersburg will also get a taste of RNC mania. 

The Tribune is reporting that on Aug. 26, the RNC will host a kick-off party at Tropicana Field.

"Plans for the Aug. 26 gathering have not been finalized, but the event could draw upward of 20,000 people.

The Secret Service on Monday confirmed plans for the kick-off event in Pinellas County that local officials had hinted at but not officially announced."

On April 11, the Pinellas Tourist Development Council voted unanimously to give $600,000 to the RNC for the kick-off party at Tropicana Field, according to the Tampa Bay Times

"The money will come from bed tax reserves and must be approved by the Pinellas County Commission."

RNC Rundown

  • The 2012 Republican National Convention will be held at the Tampa Bay Times Forum Aug. 27 - 30.
  • Kick-off party will be held on Aug. 26 at Tropicana Field
  • According to the RNC, the convention will host 2,286 delegates and 2,125 alternate delegates from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and five territories. 
  • The convention will also include approximately 15,000 credentialed media, which the RNC said is second only to the 2012 Olympic games in London.
