St. Pete Top Community for Young People

1. On Wednesday, St. Petersburg was named one of America's Promise Alliance's 100 Best Communities for Young People presented by ING. The national award was given to St. Petersburg to recognize its outstanding and innovative work in addressing the high school dropout crisis and for its programs and services that make it an outstanding place for youth to live, learn and grow, according to a city news release. St. Petersburg is a six-time 100 Best winner. "Being named one of America's Promise Alliance's 100 Best is significant and  meaningful to the entire community," said St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster in a news release. "So many dedicated people and programs contributed to this win and it further reinforces our belief that a focus on youth pays dividends to the entire community."

2. The Canadian National Team will head to St. Pete Sept. 12 to 17 to train for the upcoming World Baseball Classic Qualifying Tournament which will take place in Regensburg, Germany from September 20-23. Games include Team Canada vs. St. Petersburg College on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 3 p.m. and on Friday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m.  

3. Crews are currently working on upgrading intersections at Central Avenue and 5th Street, 6th Street, 8th Street and 31st Street. Work began this week and may continue through Feb. 2013. The city is replacing wire traffic signals with wind-resistant mast arms and traffic signals, LED countdown pedestrian signals, illuminated street sign panels and upgraded crosswalks and ADA-accessible ramps.

4. The Tampa Bay Rays will host Star Trek Night at Tropicana Field on Thursday, Sept. 20 during the Rays-Red Sox game at 7:10 p.m., according to the Rays. There will be Star Trek themed activities throughout the night, including Star Trek characters—Klingons, Star Fleet officers and more—in the press level area of Tropicana Field throughout the game, according to a news release.
