The LENS - Promoting It With Your Money

Pay attention Mayor Bill, the campaign may have jumped in to high gear.

It was not to surprising this weekend when Mark Puente of the Tampa Bay Times reported "St Petersburg council chair Leslie Curran wants more marketing for the Lens".

Sure let's just throw away more taxpayer money supporting something that a growing number of citizens don't want. Seems like Ms. Curran now wants' the public to pay for the Lipstick to put on the Pig.

So where would the money for the marketing effort likely come from?  Probably from the Marketing Department's budget, which is not part of the LENS project. Yet another attempt to get into pots of City money not part of the Pier project.

How about asking the Matzan Group to put up a $100,000 or so to market the project. Let's see how confident they are that pigs can fly.

It would seem to be insane with major legal action pending, and a second much better organized petition effort to stop the LENS underway, that the Mayor would agree to some bogus marketing campaign to prop up such an unpopular project. But with Fosters' lack of control over staff, and Chris Ballestra's uncanny ability to skirt the rules don't be too surprised if you see ads for the LENS popping up everywhere.

Desperation may be taking over. It may just be that the driving forces behind the LENS see this project slipping away and they are looking for a scapegoat on whom to blame the demise of the LENS.

Interesting strategy on Curran's part. Blame the Mayor for failing to adequately support the LENS and using City resources to  promote and support the project. Use that as the excuse the whole thing tanked.  Hang the whole albatross around poor Bill's neck and use it as a major campaign point to beat him to death in a run for Mayor.

Pay attention Mayor Bill, the campaign may have jumped in to high gear just a little bit early than expected.

City Council will have another opportunity to put the brakes on this out of control nightmare when a $5.2 million dollar funding request for the next LENS phase comes up. If the boys on City Council don't have enough huspa to just vote it down, which  they should, how about just tabling it for a while.

Come on fellas....it's time to man up
