Half-Century Club Softballers rolled past the quarter post in its 60-game season this week. Outstanding performances were common, with a good crop of rookies joining the vets and providing needed youth and fire power to team lineups.
Leonard Dente, Richard Boler, David Benson, Mike Cardella and Dale McCurdy look like good prospects through the first quarter. Dale joined his father, Larry McCurdy, as a member of the Cranes to provide a first father-son duo in the 80-year history of the club.
The Gulls, captained by Peter Golenbock, rode a seven-game winning streak to the top of the four-team league and have maintained a two-game margin over the league’s other three teams for a majority of the first 15 games of the season.
Outstanding performances by Dick Bigelow, Ray Cox and Darwin Shiflett as well as good pitching from Pete Beauregard are responsible for spearheading the Gulls’ flight to the top. Bigelow has 36 hits, 28 rbi and has scored 27 runs while amassing a .574 batting average, which, by the way, includes three home runs.
Ken Deacon has led his Kings squad with an outstanding performance during the season’s first quarter. Deacon has 40 hits; 27 runs scored; 26 rbi; and four home runs while batting .608.

He pitched his team to a playoff championship last season. In game three of the three-game series, he shut out the opponents for eight innings, allowing a single unearned run in the ninth inning, with his team
