Community Corner

Will City Council have the guts to say NO to the T B Times.

At the meeting of City Council tonight at 6 PM, the Tampa Bay Times will be requesting the City to rezone the only piece of green space along 34th St. for over 50 blocks, and the Times isn't telling anyone what they or any new owner plans to put there. This corner at 34th and 13th N is a gateway to a residential neighborhood and over 20 people who live there have signed a petition against this spot rezoning.  The property currently looks like a park and even has picnic tables for the Times' employees.  There is a large pond used by many birds including roseate spoonbills and ibises.  Without there being a certain buyer who can tell the neighborhood what the plan is for the property, it should not even be up for discussion of rezoning.  With the closing of Winn Dixie and Picadilly and lack of tenants in the strip on 22nd AV and 28th St., there is already too much empty commercial space.  We don't need more and allowing the building of new on;y makes it harder to get the old renovated and filled. The last thing this neighborhood needs is another WAWA at that corner.  Please go down to City Hall tonight (the 17th) at 6:30 and express your opinion about this.  See if our newly elected council members will support what their constituents want or what the newspaper that doles out endorsements wants.
