... and then a chicken crashed the mayoral debate

Do Kathleen Ford’s mayoral debate no-shows make her a “chicken?” It’s making at least one voter squawk.

Ford missed another debate for the St. Petersburg mayor's race, this time at a forum held Tuesday night at the Metro Wellness and Community Centers on Third Avenue N. This is her second of three confirmed no-shows, with more on the horizon, which could make the total number as many as five.

Mayor Bill Foster and former Rep. Rick Kriseman actually showed up to discuss issues important to the LGBT community. The two also appeared at a Palm View Independent Living Condominium event Monday night, hosted by Westminster Communities.

Foster and Kriseman— they are starting to sound like a vaudeville act—are also scheduled to meet again noon Wednesday for a Suncoast Tiger Bay debate forum at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.

Ford declined all three events, citing conflicts with things like trial schedules, depositions and other speaking engagements. She even begged off an event because it was her husband’s birthday.

Although Ford currently leads in citywide polls, her refusal to answer tough questions, and a growing list of excuses, is starting to make more than a few voters wonder about her availability—and commitment—to the mayor’s job.

That is, if she should get it.

On Tuesday evening’s debate, one person even dressed in a chicken suit, holding a sign saying: “Kathleen Ford too CHICKEN to debate Foster & Kriseman.”
