Morroni: 'If My Health Is Good, I'm Running Again in 2014'

What a difference a year has made for Pinellas County Commissioner John Morroni.

What a difference a year has made for Pinellas County Commissioner John Morroni.

Last year, at his 17th annual appreciation dinner for local law enforcement, the affable Republican pol all collapsed from dehydration, a side effect of the chemotherapy he was undergoing to fight non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

Still, that chemotherapy was saving Morroni's life. The therapy was having an effect. The malignant tumor was shrinking. And so, this year, after months of recovery and recuperation, Morroni presided over his law enforcement appreciation event with no issues.

If you saw John then or at Commission meetings or buzzing about town, you can literally see the vitality returned to his. He's doing well again. It's been a tough time for John, but he's better.

I spoke with John on Wednesday about what the future holds for him. Specifically, is he interested in serving another term on the County Commission? The rumor making its way around Court Street was that John was not running again in 2014. Heck, John pretty much said that to some of his colleagues on the Commission. This was it; two more years on the Commission and then John would retire from a career of public service.

But with his health better and his joie de vivre restored, John Morroni tells mes that if his health remains in good shape, he is running for re-election in 2014.

Unfortunately, it's not just his health which has Morroni worried. He's also concerned about the lawsuit seeking to impose term limits on the County Commission. There is the possibility that if the suit is successful, Morroni and some of his colleagues would be immediately removed from office and/or prevented from running again. The uncertainty of the court case has already prompted Commissioner Ken Welch to re-evaluate his future on the board.

Still, when you think about what Morroni has gone through over the past few years to get here, a (frivolous) lawsuit is not going to change his attitude. Johnny's back! Hopefully, he can stay awhile.

Patriot - I find your comments at best disturbing and worrisome. There is a case in court which in due time will be heard and settled regarding terms limits. Given the prevailing legal opinion, the voters of our county have returned Mr. Morroni to office. Your almost juvenile efforts to tar an individual's reputation however is most worrisome.

WOW Patriot!! Where are your accusations coming from?? Your immature statements are just a small part of why no one takes the time to see what is really happening in their county and only comment on the person and not the problems You should maybe read up on what their credentials are and see that some actually run for office to make things better for you..

Patriot, Did you bully all of the gay kids in school when you were a kid? It appears that you are still attempting to intimidate gays with your idiotic homophobic comments on the Patch. Your obsession with people's sexual orientation is scary. I think you should seek some psychiatric help for this issue. Maybe someday you will be able to see people as simply being people without obsessing over whether they are gay or straight.

The Commissioners are like football coaches, if you don't do your job you don't keep your job. Majority rules if you win you are back doing what you do best. We need seasoned veterans and every once in a while a yes, freshman will win and come up like they did. We had a few that made a bad decision based on "look we can save $$" it cost them their jobs. I never met or maybe met once John Moroni, I'm sure like any of them he has made less than perfect or hold your nose and vote yes decisions. If he runs again and wins…”Power to the People and Their Vote”

I agree Terri & Torrey!...10 years ago lol! The fact of the matter, the USA has a predetermined destiny...and it is steaming ahead towards it! People that cling to the old America (people like me) either need to conform, fight, or leave....I have chosen to fight.....But if AMERICANS don't get there head out of the mass media brain washing machine and begin to put the pieces together. How is that the term limit is ignored? My GOD, there is RIGHT and WRONG! It applies to all of us citizens! Why not to the ruling elite? If I water my lawn on the wrong day....boom, sanctions! If I do a rolling stop for a right hand turn on the road.....BOOM, I get sanctioned with a 158 dollar fine! IN other words, why must we be tolerant of rules, but the ELITE's in office do what they want? And as for my other statement...well I know what I know about about the guy...and nobody can tell me different

Harborite: If you are a stalker, you are failing.....I have no issues with anyone....except political scumbags that lie to EVERYONE, including there own families! For the record, I supported Commissioner John Morroni when he joined Roche and former Commissioners Nancy Bostock and Neil Brickfield in rejecting fluoridation. Of course....that was an epic fail...As MOSAIC, one of largest employers in Central Florida need someplace to dump their chemical waste, as disposal without humans is very costly....why? BECAUSE IT IS A TOXIN IDIOT! Oh well...rant complete! P

Robert: Please keep this in mind...America, I am very glad to say, is a REPUBLIC. And wile you are correct at the local level, Majority rules, at the national level, we are confined by the rules of the REPUBLIC. So wile a majority will get a person elected, it does not empower him to dictatorship. Only in a DEMOCRACY would that take place... Example.. GREECE ; )
Robert Saltzman February 11, 2013 at 09:27 PM
Who are you talking about..John Moroni is a Dictator???
Patriot February 11, 2013 at 09:35 PM
No Robert....not at all.... I was simply putting some information on the screen for the LOW INFORMATION VOTERS that read this. One of the many things twisted today in educating Americans on our government, is the constant use of the word DEMOCRACY.... I always like to set the record straight on that.
Robert Saltzman February 11, 2013 at 10:15 PM
I knew exactly what you were talking about and I wanted to call you out...now you and yours are wanting to monkey with the electroal vote...I am not in any way a"low informatiion voter"....the only thing that is twisted in our Governent are people that did all they could to surpress the vote, now that didn't work so your boy Rinsed Pukness came up with a new scheme or gimmick "lets fix the electoral vote"..TG not one State is going along with that fruit loopy idea.....
Patriot February 12, 2013 at 01:22 AM
Well Robert, you did not bust me on anything. Apparently you are one of the LIV's! I am neither a Republican, or a Democrat! But you responded exactly like a drone for a party would. What a shame, they say "with age, comes wisdom"....guess you are younger then you look!
Robert Saltzman February 12, 2013 at 09:17 AM
I'll leave it at that..you have a nice day...
