Baypines VA Surgeon Charged with Illegally Obtaining Drugs

Authorities said Dr. Richard Carpenter has illegally obtained more than 500 pills of Valium since October 2012.

Dr. Richard Carpenter, a surgeon at Baypines VA, has been arrested and charged with illegally obtaining more than 500 pills of Valium since October 2012.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, the 58-year-old St. Petersburg resident would use an acquaintance doctor's name and DEA number to obtain the prescriptions illegally.

Deputies said Carpenter, of 180 Beach Drive Apt #1501, would also use his health care insurance to offset the cost of the prescription.

Authorities say Carpenter had called in several fraudulent Valium (Diazepam) prescriptions for himself since October 2012.

Prior to his arrest on Jan. 30, deputies said he attempted to obtain more pills.

Carpenter, according to the police report, is charged with five counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and one count of attempting to obtain a controlled substance by fraud.

Dr Carpenter almost killed my child from a botched tonsilectomy. She had 2 strokes and a cardiac arrest after a bleed out. She was on a vent for 10 and the day my husband and I decided we were not going to allow her to suffer anymore GOD decided to let us keep her. She will forever be effected by what should have been a routine procedure. I forgave him and tried not to blame him but now seeing this brings anger back. You may think it is no big deal the type of drug or how many. But trust me he left victims in his wake!

My family member here in Michigan has horrific memories of what Dr. Richard Carpenter did to him during and after sinus surgery. I'm a nurse and I knew something was not right with this doctor. He was reckless and dangerous and I was worried someone would be permanently disabled or even die in his hands. I questioned if he even had a valid license to practice. Dr. Richard Carpenter was unprofessional, imprudent, and had no compassion. I thought it was an isolated case, until we started talking to others about it. Then a friend of the family told us horror stories as well... I told my family member to switch doctors immediately. He did, and what a difference. What Dr. Richard Carpenter has done to countless trusting, vulnerable patients is inexcusable. When I heard about your daughter, I got angry all over again as well. Dr. Richard Carpenter has to be held accountable for the misery and suffering he has caused in his quest for self-serving gratification. I am especially upset when I learned he was reckless with a precious child. We have contacted the attorney group prosecuting him. You should too. They need evidence and testimony to make their case about the pain and suffering he has caused so many, many patients. He needs to be held accountable and face those he has injured. I pray your daughter has fully recovered.

Sorry to have to say this...but Wake up Dharma. Read all of the posts about Dr. Richard Carpenter.... he has been botching surgeries on people, children, and amassed many, too many reckless mistakes to make this just about valium. Illegal scripts is just the tip of the ice-berg. This man is dangerous with a knife in his hand. I work in one of the hospitals he practiced in. I've seen the suffering. It's not just personal. It's professional. Dr. Richard Carpenter's carnage has to stop. He needs to be stripped of his license and be held accountable for the suffering he has caused so many.

Patriot. This is not a concern to you? It is to many injured patients. Read on.... learn what he has done with a scalpel in his reckless hands...

I will not refer to him as a DR because he is not but Dick is a very fitting name. To put it briefly he punctured my sinuses with a scalpel during a routine sinus surgery. After I complained about the clear fluid running out my nose and he assured me it was normal. It was not normal....It was my brain fluid running out my nose. he told me to give it time and it would go away. It didn't! As a result I got bacterial meningitis and came within hours of dying. My wife had to stand by my bedside and decide whether to give up my organs or not as I lay unconscious in the NICU for 2 weeks. I had to have reconstructive surgery to patch the hole in my head that exposed my brain to my sinuses cavity. This guy is a butcher and an addict.
