Baypines VA Surgeon Charged with Illegally Obtaining Drugs

Authorities said Dr. Richard Carpenter has illegally obtained more than 500 pills of Valium since October 2012.

Dr. Richard Carpenter, a surgeon at Baypines VA, has been arrested and charged with illegally obtaining more than 500 pills of Valium since October 2012.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, the 58-year-old St. Petersburg resident would use an acquaintance doctor's name and DEA number to obtain the prescriptions illegally.

Deputies said Carpenter, of 180 Beach Drive Apt #1501, would also use his health care insurance to offset the cost of the prescription.

Authorities say Carpenter had called in several fraudulent Valium (Diazepam) prescriptions for himself since October 2012.

Prior to his arrest on Jan. 30, deputies said he attempted to obtain more pills.

Carpenter, according to the police report, is charged with five counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and one count of attempting to obtain a controlled substance by fraud.

I hope this is a wake up call for VA. Affairs as this is not acceptable .I use the VA and hope that i see doctors and nurses that are on top of there game. This to me is pretty scary on the quality of health care that Vets should be getting.

Oh my friend of all the drugs one could be using valium is old and tested and doesnt hurt anyone. So if he got them illegally that is what one sould be upset about anything else.. not. It isnt like the drugs people are taking now that are going to hurt one.. like oxy or herion or anything that is something that causes a habit.. But its good they are watching our docs... and what they are doing..

and what do they mean by illegally? mail, from out of the country?? and to be very clearly honest that isnt very many pills since 2012 or early. most drugs are give out at 3 to 4 a day.. and that means that could be a month and half.

Not that this not of concern, I see it more of an internal issue for H.R. at Bay Pines......The police have more important pursuits in my opinion.

I agree this is a HR issue. In this state however they do have doctor, nurse, any person who is working with people hotline. Where anyone can call in and make a complaint. They then begin the hunt to see if it’s true. in they find out it is or not and the doc is usually taken off the job first and then they do their check and balances. i have seen people who don’t like people do this, people who are massage therapist have to stop working. Some people have to fly (in the same day)to ether Miami or Tallahassee for urine testing. And they can keep this up for over a year. Then give one a release.. Others are kept on for years if not for their life.. So it’s a big deal here. i guess i see the value behind this if there is a true reason, they are addicted to the drugs. or selling them. but u don’t have to sell this drug. so that is why i am asking what is illegal about what this person did. I know someone this happened to, and in truth they were very ill and passed away. Yet they were treated as if they were not only a user but a buyer etc.. that is why i am asking illegal? what? This person I know that it happened to didnt need this ontop of everything else due to the illness.

i got a couple of messages via email and this one of them (they are not on here??) You have no idea what this man is about. Valium may not be a big deal but the man is just not all there. He should not have been practicing. I know this as I have worked for him in Michigan." To respond view the comment on Patch. To this I respond that.. Obviously this is personal for you... and are you the one who turned him in? Since you knew him in more than one state.?? if you work in a place that is large as pay pines, or bayfront etc. when people write prescriptions they write on paper that is laying there and that doc who you say the name was used, could very well be just one of those millions of script pads laying around. I see since this is personal on some level that your anger.. But i am not sure why? frankly i do not know a doc that isn’t kinda kooky (sorry docs) eccentric feel better, but they are... anyway to write on one of those pads is stupid but if they are there, and that who was once there and the hospital or place like bay pines hasn’t changed them.. it makes some sense. Listen I don’t care if he is guilty or not. but watching others go through this because someone doesn’t like you... wasn’t easy..

this was the other email i got; anyone else getting them? "He was using a retired physicians DEA number illegally. That physician retired in 2009. What he did was illegal. Plus all the script writing he did in Michigan and did not get caught for. He deserves to go to jail. If it was you, you bet your sweet butt you would be arrested, on trial and convicted. Period, end of story." To respond view the comment on Patch

I cannot speak for recently, But Dr. Carpenter will Always have a warm spot in my heart, my father had severe lung disease, coupled with obstructive sleep apnea, Dr. Carpenter did his original Tracheotomy, and down the road, the reconstructive surgery on his palate, that gave my dad many years of life long after he would have died from the combination of the lung disease and obstructive apnea.

Dr Carpenter almost killed my child from a botched tonsilectomy. She had 2 strokes and a cardiac arrest after a bleed out. She was on a vent for 10 and the day my husband and I decided we were not going to allow her to suffer anymore GOD decided to let us keep her. She will forever be effected by what should have been a routine procedure. I forgave him and tried not to blame him but now seeing this brings anger back. You may think it is no big deal the type of drug or how many. But trust me he left victims in his wake!

My family member here in Michigan has horrific memories of what Dr. Richard Carpenter did to him during and after sinus surgery. I'm a nurse and I knew something was not right with this doctor. He was reckless and dangerous and I was worried someone would be permanently disabled or even die in his hands. I questioned if he even had a valid license to practice. Dr. Richard Carpenter was unprofessional, imprudent, and had no compassion. I thought it was an isolated case, until we started talking to others about it. Then a friend of the family told us horror stories as well... I told my family member to switch doctors immediately. He did, and what a difference. What Dr. Richard Carpenter has done to countless trusting, vulnerable patients is inexcusable. When I heard about your daughter, I got angry all over again as well. Dr. Richard Carpenter has to be held accountable for the misery and suffering he has caused in his quest for self-serving gratification. I am especially upset when I learned he was reckless with a precious child. We have contacted the attorney group prosecuting him. You should too. They need evidence and testimony to make their case about the pain and suffering he has caused so many, many patients. He needs to be held accountable and face those he has injured. I pray your daughter has fully recovered.

Sorry to have to say this...but Wake up Dharma. Read all of the posts about Dr. Richard Carpenter.... he has been botching surgeries on people, children, and amassed many, too many reckless mistakes to make this just about valium. Illegal scripts is just the tip of the ice-berg. This man is dangerous with a knife in his hand. I work in one of the hospitals he practiced in. I've seen the suffering. It's not just personal. It's professional. Dr. Richard Carpenter's carnage has to stop. He needs to be stripped of his license and be held accountable for the suffering he has caused so many.

Patriot. This is not a concern to you? It is to many injured patients. Read on.... learn what he has done with a scalpel in his reckless hands...
