Drive-By Shooting Leads to Car Accident

Police say a car pulled next to the victim's car and opened fire before the victim's car ran a red light and crashed into another vehicle.

A Pontiac Sunbird was stopped at a red light around 11 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of 18th Avenue South and 22nd Street when a white four-door sedan pulled up next to the Sunbird and two people began shooting at the Sunbird. 

According to St. Petersburg Police, in an attempt to escape, the driver of the Sunbird drove through the intersection, ran a red light and struck a silver Chrysler Le Baron, which was entering the intersection with the green light.

The suspects in the white sedan, according to the police report, continued to fire at the Sunbird after the accident, striking the Le Baron as well.

Police said the suspect's vehicle, which had four occupants, fled the area and the two occupants of the Sunbird attempted to flee the accident scene on foot, however, the wounded victim collapsed in the parking lot a the credit union on the southeast corner of the intersection.

According to police, the shooting victim was a transported to a local hospital and appears to be in stable condition at this time. The second unidentified occupant of the Sunbird was not located and it is unknown if he suffered any injuries.

The female driver, who was the lone occupant of the Le Baron, was uninjured although her car was struck several time by gunfire.

Investigators are still attempting to identify the suspects involved in this case and are seeking the public's assistance. Anyone with information regarding this case can call the St. Petersburg Police Department at 727-893-7780.
