St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue were able to save four family pets from a burning home Wednesday at 835 39 Ave. N.
According to a news release, at 11:22 a.m., firefighters reported a large column of smoke visible several blocks away as they raced to the scene.
Upon arrival firefighters found a single story masonry home with heavy fire showing from the rear of the structure.
Firefighters forced their way into the structure, battling back the flames as they searched for possibly trapped victims. During their search they located three Chihuahuas and one cat.
All were suffering from severe smoke inhalation. Firefighters administered oxygen with special oxygen pet masks, a news release said.
According to St. Pete Fire and Rescue, the four animals seemed to respond to the firefighter's treatment and were transported in stable condition by the owner once he arrived home, to a local veterinarian hospital. Firefighters continued to extinguished the fire and called for a fire investigator.
Primary damage estimates approximately $75,000.
There were no other injuries at the time of the fire.
