Woman Found Dead in Apartment Fire

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, one woman is dead after a Tuesday afternoon apartment fire.

A 65-year-old woman was found dead inside her apartment Tuesday by deputies responding to a fire at the Paradise Shores Condominiums.

Phyllis Wells was pronounced dead in her apartment, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. The complex is located at 5356 81st St. N., Lealman.

The fire started in the back of the apartment, and several people in the complex tried to help but were forced back by the smoke and blaze, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

The apartment fire does not appear to be suspicious, Pinellas deputies said.

The investigation is ongoing, according to a news release.

The article fails to state if there was a smoke detector present in the apartment as required by fire code or if there were fire sprinklers present in the apartment. If this is a high- rise apartment building did their condo association opt out of fire sprinklers as a part of recent legislation that gives condo associations the right to not provide the basic levels of fire safety that we find in Motel Six? Give us the real story.
