Pedestrian Struck by SUV

The 29-year-old St. Petersburg man was trying to cross 16th Street near Central late Saturday night when he was hit by the SUV.

A St. Petersburg man crossing 16th Street at Central Avenue was struck by an SUV around 1:27 a.m. Sunday morning. 

According to St. Petersburg Police, Willie Keys was driving his 2007 Cadillac SUV south on 16 Street North in the median lane and was approaching the
intersection of Central Avenue.

Benjamin Saxe, police said, was walking along the south sidewalk of Central Avenue and was attempting to cross the intersection of 16th Street.

According to witness statements, Keys had a green light to proceed south
and Saxe, 29, attempted to cross 16th Street and was struck by the SUV in the crosswalk.

Saxe, according to police was knocked to the ground and came to rest in the grass just West of 16th Street. Saxe was transported to Bayfront Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Police said Keys, 41, was not injured in the crash.
