Arrest in Teen's Fatal Shooting

A 19-year-old suspect faces a manslaughter charge, after St. Petersburg police say he accidentally shot 15-year-old Carl Martin.

St. Petersburg police have made an arrest in the , who was shot while riding in a stolen vehicle Thursday night.

Demontray Lovett, 19, of 2400 15th Ave. S., is charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and a delinquent in possession of a firearm.

Lovett and Martin were among a group of five suspects riding in a stolen 2002 Dodge Caravan Thursday. The group drove to St. Pete Beach with the intent to steal another vehicle.

Lovett, who was armed with a 40-caliber handgun, was seated in the right passenger seat, directly behind Martin, who was in the front passenger seat, according to police.

At about 10:45 p.m. Thursday, while out on St. Pete Beach, police said that Lovett accidently discharged the gun. The bullet went through the front passenger seat and struck Martin's upper torso.

With Martin critically wounded and losing consciousness, the group drove back into St. Petersburg.

Believing that Martin had died, the rest of the group abandoned the van in south St. Petersburg, and fled the scene. The vehicle was found by police at about 11:30 p.m.

Police discovered the 15-year-old boy inside. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

No other arrests have been made at this point. The investigation is still ongoing as to the involvement other individuals in the van.

Detectives are also attempting to figure out who is responsible for stealing the van in Lakeland on Dec. 21.
