Police Officer Seriously Injured in Crash

The officer and two others were sent to the hospital after the crash, which happened at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. St. and 1st Avenue North.

A St. Petersburg Police Officer is in serious condition after a police cruiser crashed into a Chevy truck at the intersection of Marin Luther King Jr. St. and 1st Avenue North Friday afternoon. 

According to police, both vehicles entered the intersection at the same time and then collided. What led to the crash is still under investigation.  

Officer Bridget Voelker, the driver of the police cruiser, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with serious injuries.

The driver and passenger of the 2011 Chevy TK, Cynthia Johnson and Carolyn Leonard were also taken to Bayfront Medical Center. 

Police said the Johnson was southbound on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North and Officer Voelker was westbound on 1st Avenue North when the two collided in the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North.

Traffic signals at that intersection were working properly at the time, police said. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
