Police: Old Northeast Car Burglar Caught

Police said the suspect would hunt for unlocked doors before committing a burglary.

A St. Petersburg man has been arrested and charged with four auto burglaries in the Old Northeast neighborhood.

According to St. Petersburg Police, 29-year-old Christopher Westervelt was walking through the area pulling car door handles to see if it was unlocked.

Police said when he found a vehicle unlocked he would commit a burglary. 

According to police a resident of Old Northeast saw him getting out of a car and called police. Responding officers arrested Westervelt without incident. 

Westervelt, who is listed as a transient, has been charged with five counts of burglary and two counts of fraudulent use of a credit card. He is awaiting trail in the Pinellas County Jail on a $45,000 bond. 

According to jail records, Westervelt has previously been charged with disorderly conduct, possession of hydrocodone and trespassing.
