Toddler Falls in Coal Pit at St. Pete Campground, Police Say

A 2-year-old boy fell into a pit at a St. Petersburg campground Sunday, according to a media release.

A 2-year-old St. Petersburg boy fell into a pit with heated coals at the KOA Campground at 5400 95th St. N in St. Pete around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, according to a media release.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, the family was staying at the campground for the boy's 2nd birthday when he lost his balance on a scooter and fell into the pit.

His mother and other family members pulled him out of the pit and called 911. The child was taken to Tampa General Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Officials say he is in stable condition in the intensive care-unit.

The boy sustained first and second degree burns to his back, left arm and left leg, police say.

The boy fell into a pit with heated coals at the KOA Campground at 5400 95th St. N in St. Pete on Sunday afternoon, according to The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

The boy has been taken to the hospital and is listed in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Tampa General Hospital, police say.

According to the media release, detectives say the incident appears to be an accident.
