828 Pier Alliance Work Begins

The group is tasked with creating a process to select a new pier by Aug. 28.

In June Mayor Bill Foster announced the creation of the pier 828 Alliance, which would be tasked with creating a process to select a new St. Petersburg Pier.

Wednesday the group held its first meeting at City Hall to talk about how it would operate under the Sunshine laws and what the group's mission is.

Foster said the group is not designing a pier, just a process to select a new pier.

The name, 828, signifies Aug. 28. That is the day after the Aug. 27 primary when voters will decide whether or not to stop the "Lens" pier design.

Foster said the group would ensure St. Petersburg continues its history of having a pier on the waterfront.

"Everyone in this room agrees," Foster said Wednesday. "Having no pier is not an option."

Members of the group include representatives from Stop the Lens, St. Pete Chamber, marine science community, CONA, local architects and other local groups.

The 828 Alliance will meet at least once every two weeks until the group can propose a process to select a new pier to Foster.
