RNC Parking Restrictions Begin Today

Parking around downtown hotels will be restricted today. More restrictive parking measures begin Friday.

Today marks the first day of parking restrictions on downtown St. Petersburg due to the Republican National Convention Kick-Off Party later this weekend.

On Sunday, the RNC will host "The world's largest cocktail party" at Tropicana Field and the event has been designated as a National Special Security Event (NSSE) by Homeland Security.

Secret Service will be closing down streets for the NSSE event Friday night, but parking restrictions begin today around downtown St. Petersburg hotels, including around the Hilton, Vinoy and Marriott.

On Friday parking restrictions become much more expansive. You will not be allowed to park around Mirror Lake, Tropicana Field or the Police Station. For a full list of street closures and parking restrictions, .

With all of the moaning and groaning I've read on Patch about security measures planned for St. Petersburg during the RNC, I see this map as GOOD NEWS, and ESPECIALLY for people who live near the fray. So what if there are some minor inconveniences for a few days? Thank you, Homeland Security, for making us safe in our own backyard.
