Ryan's First Florida Visit Draws Supporters, Protesters

Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan made his first appearance in Florida since presidential hopeful Mitt Romney tapped him as running mate.

More than a hundred supporters and protesters of GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan came out Saturday during his appearance at the members-only Club at Treasure Island.

Ryan made his just one week after being named Mitt Romney's . Florida is a battleground state in this campaign.

Ryan started the morning with a public appearance at the Villages retirement community, which is northwest of Orlando, and then headed to Treasure Island for a private fundraiser. Supporters said they want the candidates focused on jobs and getting rid of the U.S. debt.

A throng of protesters lined the north side of Treause Island Causeway, near the entrance to the Club at Treasure Island. Those who came out Saturday did not get to hear or see Ryan, but shouted and waved their signs as his motorcade was escorted on to the property of the private club.

Protesters on Saturday said that Ryan's budget plan favors the wealthy and hinders the middle class.

"Ryan is a complete and total hypocrite," said protester Jim Shirk. "He has tried to privatize Social Security and turn Medicare into a voucher system. It’s an absolutely travesty."

Shirk said he is afraid that the Romney/Ryan tax plan would hurt the middle class while giving big tax breaks to millionaires and corporations.

"If the Ryan/Romney group gets in, you’ll see a million jobs lost. You’ll see the middle class families pay an extra $2,000 in taxes a year to give the top one percent an average of $250,000 lower in taxes," Shirk told Patch. "I’m utterly terrified of the possibility of Romney and Ryan becoming president and vice president."

Ryan and Romney supporters told Patch that their plan would fix the American economy.

"I believe that it’s time that we get our fiscal house in order," said Ryan supporter Betsi Burgess. "We are headed for financial Armageddon. Whether you are right, left or center, that looming problem faces every one of us.

"You've got to have a start line and a finish line and you gotta have the wherewithal and determination to stay the course," Burgess added. "I believe (Ryan's) the kind of guy that can do that."

Laura Travison, a Ryan supporter, said re-electing Obama would be a mistake that this country cannot afford.

"I’m concerned that the Obama campaign will change our country from more of a free democracy into more a big government, socialist country," Travison said. "That is not what America is about."

Our America, (econonic system, military, infrastructure, healthcare, etc) is totally broken and corrupted beyond any political repair. I think both Obama/Biden and Romney/Ryan are both fighting to preserve this current corrupt Government and to continue the fleecing of America. But between the two candidates I prefer Obama because; 1) Mom always told us "share-and don't be selfish", Romney/Ryan seem like kids who never share. 2) I never trust anyone in a suit, yeah Obama wears a suit too but does not look comfortable in them, like me when I have to wear one, and Romney looks like he was born wearing one-just too slick for me. 3) Michelle is very cool :) 4) That’s all I can think of right now but even so it out weighs the pro Romney list by 3, in fact I can't think of one pro to put on the Romney/Ryan list. I think that "IF" we give Obama 4 more years and add a democratically controlled Congress, we may have a chance at some "Hope and Change". His goals for us in the first term have been blocked by the Republicans, I totally blame them not him. But if we Americans screw up and elect Romney/Ryan we must make sure to give him a Democratic controlled Congress to prevent him selling off America, pocketing all the remaining cash, and going bankrupt. Lets hope America elect mostly Democrats to Congress this election for all our sakes..

Ok now stop this comment please.. again how can u believe in these two people. One has a record of buying companies and putting people of jobs and making a profit. He hasn’t kept his job in mass thank god .. And to the 40 yr old what is that you think he knows about the people’s needs. I ask you to look around u and congrats to your kids at 40 or have it made and to those who have children who are struggling who have no jobs. If u remembers what it was like to be 40 you had it made and then your brain knows there is no way up further and you begin to show that in your work ethics and actions. You take more and give less. You know it’s just a couple of yrs before you’re gone. And been forced out of the work place, lowered your expectations and even that doesn’t save your job. Now your forced into early retirement so you’re working for minimum wage. These two can’t relate to any needs of the country at this time. But one was indeed apart of dismantling the work force. Why would u even vote for them?

Looks like someone played a joke on them when they handed out the signs - the conservatives are all about hope and change and the liberals are preaching death and destruction.

I was there. There were less than 50 protesters at Treasure Island.

Oh and isn't this funny how Obama's campaign logo looks like this one from Eastern Europe - I think it is a socialist party? http://index.hu/cikkepek/0802//belfold//nepszavazasobama.jpg
