"Salty Topics" Lecture: Ocean Acidification and Why It Matters to Floridians

Weedon Island Preserve presents this lecture with David Hastings, faculty member and chemical oceanographer at Eckerd College. His research includes studying the history of climate change and most recently how Gulf of Mexico sediments are impacted by the BP oil spill.

Here's the description from the event's Web site:

"The ocean does us a huge favor: it absorbs 1/3 of the carbon dioxide we release into the atmosphere every day. But the other problem with CO2 is that when it dissolves in water, it is an acid, and this acidic water affects a wide range of marine organisms including coral, sea butterflies, baby oysters, and sea urchins, among others. As the oceans absorb more CO2 , they become more acidic and corrosive. Because our understanding of ocean chemistry is very good, we can accurately predict how acidic the ocean will become.  How does this impact Florida? How will this affect us? Come find out!"
