High School Rivals Compete in Annual Mayor's Cup

Lakewood and Gibbs will square off for an annual football game to be televised live in St. Petersburg.

ST. PETERSBURG – An annual fall rite – the football matchup between rival high school teams – will take place on Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

The Mayor's Cup High School Football Classic pits the Lakewood Spartans against Gibbs Gladiators. The winner takes home a trophy and showcases it until the next year's competition.

The high school matchup will be televised by Bright House Sports Network, which also is sponsoring the competition.

Although the game is usually held at Al Lang Field, the stadium may be used by the FC Tampa Bay soccer team that night, which will push the football matchup to Gibbs High School.

Bright House subscribers can watch the game live on Bright House Sports  Network, Channel 47 and HD 1147.

Mayor Bill Foster plans to highlight different high schools in St. Petersburg starting next year, and possibly include other communities.

The 2012 classic is slated to be played in the Fall at Al Lang Stadium.
