Greenlight Pinellas is Cool, and it's what the Earth Needs

New studies recently released show that global warming, or climate change, is not just a future problem but a problem for today. The effects are happening now – and they're not good. Coastal areas such as Pinellas County are the most affected. Since the 1960's, sea levels along Florida coastlines have risen more than 5 inches. Sea level rise increases saltwater intrusion, and rising sea temperatures affect marine life.

Climate change is real. Fossil fuel emissions are heating the planet. Greenlight Pinellas, by reducing traffic and subsequent carbon emissions, will help counter the negative effects of climate change. The new high-tech buses and 24 mile light rail line are not only cool, they will help cool the planet.

Greenlight Pinellas will increase bus services by 65%. Nighttime and weekend service will increase by 80%. As additional routes and services are added, ridership will increase taking more and more cars off the roads. When the light rail line opens (scheduled for 2024), traffic congestion will be reduced even further. Over 15,000 commuters a day use a similar rail service in Charlotte North Carolina.

Using the latest technology, light rail is extremely energy-efficient. Newer buses are also energy-efficient with diesel – hybrid electric engines. Wi-Fi is also available. It's time to move Pinellas County forward with increased public transit. Let's reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions. Vote yes on Greenlight Pinellas. It's the cool thing to do!
