Its a shame they are closing it down.....and I am happy they are making the Lens, however I wish the design included a building for the businesses to continue to run. I dont think they took into consideration the summer heat here....no one is going to go down there to walk the pier in the blistering sun. Check out my site for pics around downtown to include the pier! www.photospaced.com

The St. Pete Pier has been a popular spot for locals and tourists for generations. It has been rebuilt over the years but essentially stayed the same. Located on 2nd Avenue, extending into Tampa Bay, the Pier invites people to experience the waterfront. Visitors walk, bike, drive or take the Looper Trolley. It has shops, restaurants, a place to rent bait and tackle, as well as a place to hand-feed fresh fish to the pelicans that sit idly and dry their wings along the pier. Visitors may take a scenic boat ride on Tampa Bay on the Dolphin Queen cruise, enjoy a fun and educational experience at the Pier Aquarium, dine on the rooftop at Cha Cha Coconuts, or browse one of the specialty gift and apparel shops that occupy the 1st floor. In addition, the Pier hosts hundreds of events each year, including 4th of July fireworks shows and live music every Sunday rain or shine.

No question about it: The Pier offers the best views of the city and the bay, and Johnny Reno’s (ground floor) is a good place to grab a drink. Unfortunately from there it falls very short. The aquarium has seen better days, Cha Cha Coconuts is dirty and sometimes smelly, and many of the shops are a strange combination of sad & cheesy. Even the grand Columbia Restaurant, while usually OK, is no match for the original Tampa location. I hate to say this, especial with all the furor over the Lens, but the Pier is really just for tourists or dropping a line— non fishing locals go elsewhere.
I love the pier and I always take people down there when they came to Florida to visit. Lots of great stores, cute aquarium, and Cha Cha's is a must to visit. It is neat to see the pelicans and horse carriages. I am heartbroken that they are going to tear it down next year.
OK, so the Pier is a little dilapidated now. I still love visiting it and I hope they don't tear it down.

I proposed a new Waterfront Master Plan two years ago which considered Boater access, and protection, along with future high speed cat service to Channelside, with a full retail complex. The plan would have been a public/private collaboration utilizing the 50 million from the State. The problem with the Lens is it is not much more than a sculpture out in the water and does nothing for boaters, or future expansion. Pretty but with little vision,
