Auto Thefts Up Sharply; Police Launch Public Service Campaign

A new video aims to teach people about the need to turn off their vehicles and take their keys with them, when they run into shops or stores in their neighborhood.

A new public service effort by St. Petersburg Police highlights a sharp increase in auto thefts in 2013 and the need for people to take their keys with them when they leave their cars – even for a moment. From January-April 2013, auto thefts in St. Petersburg increased 43 percent from the same time period last year, police report. In most cases, the victims left their keys in the ignition, often with the car running. Three Charged with Attempted First Degree Murder, Home Invasion

A son found his 63-year-old mother severely beaten and unable to speak following the home invasion, police said.

Three suspects have been charged with attempted first-degree murder and home invasion robbery after police said a woman was critically beaten and her home ransacked for valuables.  Jihi McEvoy, 63, of the 200 block of 79th Avenue Northeast, was found by her son around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday severely beaten and unable to communicate what had happen to her. According to St. Petersburg Police, she was transported to the Bayfront Medical Center with severe upper body trauma and is currently listed in critical condition. Police say her son, Mickey White, was led away from the home around midnight by an acquaintance, Carrie Marcink, while two other suspects invaded the home.  Marcink, according to police, asked White to come with her to an ATM so …

Fourth Suspect Arrested in Teenage Prostitution Investigation

Ashley Clark, 19, has been charged with procuring a minor for prostitution and deriving support from the proceeds of prostitution.

A St. Petersburg woman has been arrested by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office for allegedly helping a 15-year-old girl into prostitution and then making money off the teenage victim.  Ashley Clark, 19, has been charged with procuring a minor for prostitution and deriving support from the proceeds of prostitution. Clark's arrest is the fourth in a prostitution investigation stemming from an incident at the Knight's Inn in unincorporated St. Petersburg. Three others have previously been charged with forcing two teens into prostitution.  According to the arrest report, the victim and Clark had been staying at the LaQuinta Inn and Gateway Motel for two weeks. Deputies said during that time, the victim and Clark engaged in prostitution. "…

Do You Know Where These Stolen Dresses Came From?

St. Petersburg Police are searching for the owners of stolen dresses recovered from a rash of retail thefts.

St. Petersburg Police are asking for you help identifying where stolen dresses (pictured above) were taken from.  According to a statement, "St. Pete Police are investigating a rash of retail thefts and Need your help locating the owners of these dresses! We believe these dresses were taken from a shop in the Central Avenue business area." If you have any information on where these dresses came from, you can call Detective Barry Books at 727-893-7780. Morning House Fire Investigated in St. Pete

Neighbors though that propane cylinders used for a grill might be the cause, but firefighters said that none had exploded.

A homeowner who left his house for a short time Tuesday morning received a panicked call from his neighbor: His home caught fire. St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue responded at 10:37 a.m., Tuesday, May 21, to the home in the 1000 block of 64th Avenue South. The fire had started on the back porch but spread to the rest of the house and the attic. Several 911 callers thought that a propane cylinder had exploded in the rear of the home causing the fire. Investigators found the 20-pound propane cylinders on the back porch of the home with fire damage to them. But none had exploded. Firefighters aggressively attacked the blaze and searched for possible occupants, finding none. They found four dogs in the back yard that were moved to a safer location…

OMG PD: Accidental Starbucks Shooting, Mayor's Gun Stolen,

We compile the odd, unusual "oh my gosh" police items from throughout the Tampa Bay region.

Forget the shot of espresso. A woman having coffee at Starbucks in Tyrone Square Mall in St. Petersburg this past weekend was shot in the calf when her friend's gun discharged from inside her purse. According to an article in the Tampa Bay Times, 38-year-old Amiee Peterson of Pinellas Park did not even realize that she had been shot until she saw blood oozing from her leg. Her friend, 51-year-old Pamela Back, also of Pinellas Park, told police that she kept the gun in her purse, but had never taken it out or cleaned it, since her father had given her the .25 caliber firearm. Two men are charged with stealing used cooking and fryer grease from a Wendy's in Sarasota and may be responsible for similar crimes in Pinellas County, authorities …

Woman, Boyfriend Charged in Robbery, Abduction, Car Burning

St. Petersburg Police say the woman, 26, and man, 49, robbed someone at knifepoint, made him drive to an ATM machine to make a withdrawal, then took off with his SUV, which was later found burning and abandoned.

Police have arrested a woman and her boyfriend who they say were responsible for robbing and abducting a St. Petersburg man, using his bank card at an ATM to withdraw money, then burning an SUV they stole from him. Juliann Betancourt, 26, and Jeffrey Santiago, 49, were both taken into custody without incident by detectives around 5:40 p.m. Wednesday in the 3700 block of Fourth Street North, according to St. Petersburg Police. Detectives say Betancourt is the woman seen on security camera footage April 22 at an ATM machine at a TD Bank, withdrawing money from the 55-year-old victim's account. Betancourt and Sanitago are accused of taking the card from the man, whom they had approached hours earlier outside his home in the 1700 block of 22nd…
