Two people were rescued by Coast Guard crewmembers approximately one mile east of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge on their 19-foot boat Thursday.
The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two people a mile east of the Sunshine SkywayBridge on May 9 after their 19-foot boat began taking on water near the center span of the Skyway bridge. According to the Coast Guard, members of Sea Tow contacted Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders at 4:47 p.m. Thursday, and reported the people aboard were in need of assistance. The crew of a 25-foot response boat from Coast Guard Station St.Petersburg arrived on scene and was able to control the flooding, a news release said. They placed the boat in tow and transported them to DemensLanding Marina in St. Petersburg. No injuries were reported, the Coast Guard said. A 20-year-old Pinellas Park man got away from deputies chasing him following a traffic stop, but not from an alligator that attacked him in unincorporated St. Petersburg.
A 20-year-old man fleeing authorities following a traffic stop was able to get away from the deputies chasing him, but not from an alligator. Bryan Zuniga, who was pulled over by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office at 2:47 a.m. May 9 for failing to maintain a single lane, later showed up at a local hospital with multiple puncture wounds to his face, arm and armpit area, telling authorities an alligator attacked him near a water treatment plant in unincorporated St. Petersburg. A state attorney has said Officer Christopher Dolch was justified in his shooting of Pamela Dale Kirk.
A St. Petersburg Police officer has been cleared by a Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney in the April 28 shooting death of Pamela Dale Kirk. State attorney Bernie McCabe wrote in his ruling: "As a result of the investigation conducted by this office, I have determined that Officer Christopher Dolch was in the lawful performance of his legal duty when he responded to a call for a welfare check on Pamela Dale Kirk. The St. Petersburg Police officer was driving at 110 mph in a 40 mph zone when his vehicle struck a curb and flipped over.
St. Petersburg Police Officer Timothy Reyes has been suspended without pay for five days and ordered to attend remedial driving school, following an internal review of a high-speed car accident. The total damage from the crash, including to the cruiser, topped $30,000. Reyes' five-day suspension from work began on Tuesday, May 7. According to the police report, Reyes was traveling 110 mph in a 40 mph zone in his marked police cruiser, with his emergency equipment activated, while attempting to catch up to an authorized police pursuit in progress. Officer Mehmedin Karic was fired in 2012 after his police cruiser crashed into a pedestrian while going 20 miles over the speed limit. An arbitrator has now ruled Karic should get his job back, the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Traveling at 20 mph over the speed limit in his police car, officer Mehmedin Karic did not see Harold Fleming crossing 38th Avenue North near the intersection of 64th Street in his wheel chair in February 2012 when he crashed into Fleming. According to St. Petersburg Police, Fleming died from injuries he sustained in the crash. In August 2012 Police Chief Chuck Harmon and The Chain of Command Board fired Karic because, "Officer Karic had no legal justification for speeding and was involved in a crash that resulted in a death," the report said. Lamar Maddox, 39, has been charged with 2nd degree murder.
A Marion County man wanted for the death of another man in Marion County has been found in St. Petersburg taken into custody by the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, according to a report by Bay News 9. Lamar Maddox, 39, has been charged with 2nd degree murder. According to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, a verbal altercation between Brandon Simmons and Maddox turned deadly when Maddox allegedly pulled a handgun and shot Simmons multiple times. Authorities said witnesses chased Maddox but lost him in a wooded area near the scene of the crime at 17025 SE 249 Terrance in Umatilla, FL. The woman and another suspect are accused of forcing a St. Petersburg man to ride with them at knifepoint as they made an ATM withdrawal using his bank card last month, police said.
Detectives are looking for a woman who they say used an ATM card that she and another suspect stole from a St. Petersburg man during an armed robbery and abduction last month. Security photos show the woman at the ATM at TD Bank, at 22nd Avenue North and 4th Street in St. Petersburg, around 3 a.m. April 22. The woman and another man are accused of taking the card from a 55-year-old man whom they had approached hours earlier outside his home in the 1700 block of 22nd Avenue North, according to St. Petersburg Police. The victim was "mildly acquainted" with the woman but had never before come into contact with the other man, police say. A man wanted in connection with a March 15 homicide was found hiding in a child's crib and was bitten on the arm by a K-9 before being taken into custody Tuesday, St. Petersburg Police said. Detectives found Morris Hires, 18, hiding in a child's crib inside his home in the 500 block of 26th Avenue South around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, officials said. Hires was tracked down by a police K-9 and was bitten on the arm by the dog during the course of the arrest as he resisted attempts to be taken into custody, police spokesperson Mike Puetz said. A man accused of setting fire to his St. Petersburg home is now also facing first-degree murder charges, authorities said Friday. Daniel Thomas Papaleo, 60, is charged in the beating death of 33-year-old Robert Greaves, whose body was found badly burned Wednesday evening inside Papaleo's home at 1030 13th St. N. Greaves apparently died before the blaze as a result of multiple blows to the back of the head, investigators said. A hammer was found at the crime scene. St. Petersburg Police said they believe Greaves was invited to the home by Thomas sometime before the fire Wednesday. Greaves fathered a child with Papaleo's daughter, according to investigators.
