St. Raphael's Band Plays On

The small Catholic school on Snell Isle benefits from a husband-and-wife team of music teachers. Joy and Volker auf dem Kampe have taught for nearly 25 years.

Joy and Volker auf dem Kampe did not move to St. Petersburg to run the music program at St. Raphael Catholic School. Having met, lived and taught music composition at a high school conservatory in Frankfurt, Germany, the auf dem Kampes relocated to northeast St. Pete to work in health care. But their daughter's new school only had a nominal music program and did not have the resources or skills to host a winter holiday concert. The musically inclined auf dem Kampe family could not bear the thought of St. Raphael schoolchildren lacking in a formal music education, along with the rigorous academic studies they already received at the Catholic school. So Joy made herself available as a volunteer. The school eventually convinced her and Volker…
