Flu Cases Up Significantly at Bayfront

Bayfront, according to a news release, is taking the precaution of isolating all patients who arrive with the flu, or flu-like symptoms until diagnosed or discharged.

Bayfront Medical Center, like many hospitals in the area and around the country, is currently seeing an extraordinarily high volume of patients with the flu or flu-like symptoms in its ER. According to the hospital, while it does not yet have hospital flu statistics to report, the Bayfront Emergency room treated around 50 more patients Monday than average. Monday had 181 cases compared to the 133 case average.  "The flu season seemed to come on very quickly this season, and about two weeks earlier than usual," said Dr. Jennifer Fredericks, who is treating patients in the ER, in a news release. "As always, I'd like to encourage the public to please get the flu shot and to be very diligent about hand washing." Bayfront, according to a news …

Florida Baby Born at 12:12 p.m. on 12-12-12 at Bayfront Medical Center

Parents Jessica and Adrian Diaz welcomed a baby boy – their first child – at 12:12 p.m. on Dec. 12, 2012.

On Wednesday afternoon, Jessica and Adrian Diaz welcomed their firstborn child at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.  If the significance of having their firstborn wasn't enough, baby Adrian Jayden Diaz was born at exactly 12:12 p.m. on 12-12-2012. How's that for remarkable? Wednesday, Dec. 12, marks the last time for the next 89 years that someone may be born on a date with repeating numbers for day, month and year. Perhaps young Adrian will one day share this story with his grandkids or even great-grandkids, as the next significant year draws near. Baby Adrian will be called AJ, his parents say. The healthy boy weighs in at 8 pounds and six ounces. He was born after nearly 30 hours of labor, and his birth was not timed by a C-…

Knife Attack Survivor to Present Awards to Her Medical Heroes

Melissa Dohme will recognize the people who helped her make a 'miraculous' recovery after getting stabbed 32 times and being left for dead near her Clearwater home.

The survivor of a harrowing knife attack will present awards to her medical heroes Friday as Bayfront Health Foundation honors local first responders. Melissa Dohme, 20, was brutally stabbed 32 times and left for dead near her home by Crest Lake Park in January. She arrived at Bayfront Medical Center suffering from stab wounds to her face and neck, underwent several emergency surgical procedures and flat-lined numerous times while receiving more than 12 pints of blood.  Now fully recovered, Dohme will have a chance to honor her trauma surgeon, Dr. Jeff Johnson, with the 2012 Real Hero Award. Johnson has called Dohme's recovery "nothing short of miraculous." Dohme will also get to meet her Bayflite pilot, flight nurse and paramedic for the …

Tampa Police say James Murphy, an anesthesiologist at Bayfront Medical Center, is charged with 33 counts of possession of child pornography.

An anesthesiologist at Bayfront Medical Center faces 33 counts of possession of child pornography, according to the Tampa Police Department.  James Murphy, 49, was arrested Wednesday by Tampa police. Investigators found images of child pornography on Murphy's home computer, police said. In an interview with the Tampa Bay Times, a Bayfront spokeswoman said Murphy has been employed at the hospital since 2005. According to Bay News 9, Murphy has been placed on administrative leave by the hospital.  Police said that on Feb. 2 that they received a tip about the pornography, which led to a search warrant at Murphy's home, at 6601 South Westshore Boulevard, Tampa.  According to police, detectives recovered numerous electronic devices from inside …
