The Shops at St. Pete Construction to Begin Soon

Crews are expected to break ground on the $30 million dollar renovation within 30 days.

Construction on the major renovation at The Shops at St. Pete, formerly BayWalk, is expected to begin within 30 days, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Kevin Dunn, a representative of The Edwards Group, told the Times, "A lot of things have to come together in the next couple weeks but that's the intent." This following the city council's unanimous approval of the designs for the project last Thursday. The 80,000-square-foot complex will have a modern look with straight, clean lines and include natural stone floors, the Times reports. The Shops at St. Pete will feature more outdoor dining with covered walkways and canopies over balconies, according to the newspaper. Developer Bill Edwards told Patch in a previous story that the future …

Ah yes... another monument to the self-centered egomaniac who wants to be king of St. Petersburg since he can't be Donald Trump. About 200 people in the Bay area will be able to afford anything sold in that glossed-over strip mall.   more ›

New BayWalk Renderings Released, Parking Agreement Approved

On Thursday, city council unanimously passed a parking resolution with BayWalk in hopes to lure anchor tenants to the downtown shopping district.

City council unanimously passed a parking resolution Thursday with BayWalk in hopes to lure anchor tenants for the center’s redevelopment. Once the project is complete it will be called the Shops at St. Petersburg. In the agreement, 180 rooftop spots at the existing lot would be reserved for BayWalk employees. Also included in the agreement would be validation parking for BayWalk patrons, similar to the agreement the city currently has with Muvico. BayWalk was purchased by Bill Edwards’ company, Loan Ranger Acquisitions. In a Sept. 3 letter to Mayor Bill Foster, Edwards said parking for employees and customers is "paramount." "In order for the Edwards Group (aka Loan Ranger Acquisitions LLC) to invest tens of millions of dollars to …

BayWalk Asks for Parking to Help Lure New Tenants

According to Mayor Bill Foster, the proposed agreement would help the Shops at St. Pete and save the city money.

In order to lure anchor tenants to the new BayWalk, which will be called 'the Shops at St. Pete', owner Bill Edwards and Loan Ranger Acquisitions are asking city officials for parking help.  They are asking to purchase 180 parking spaces and validation agreements at the existing parking garage located on the north side of 1st Avenue N between 1st and 2nd Street North. According to a memo from Mayor Bill Foster to City Council; The "agreements are designed to ensure there is adequate and attractive nearby parking for (the Shops at St. Pete) employees and customers at the City's mid-core garage. In order to attract certain key tenants, it is imperative that Loan Ranger Acquisitions, has the ability to provide an allocation of parking space …

I think the wealth in this area is a lot deeper than we realize. We have a very laid back culture, so people aren't as flashy as they are in other places. With that in mind, who would have thought that International Mall would do so well? Even Brandon and Countryside are upscaling somewhat. Who would have expected H&M to go into Tyrone (even before Brandon)? Whole Foods considering a downtown St…   more ›

Baywalk Demolition Begins

A construction fence cordons off most of the outdoor mall in downtown St. Pete, as buildings that make up the mall are torn down.

Baywalk is fast fading into St. Petersburg history. The Spanish-style outdoor mall's opening in 2000 had marked the start of the revitalization of downtown St. Petersburg. Now the largely vacant mall is being reduced to rubble to make way for a new development. Only the Muvico Theater and Happy Feet, the Birkenstock store, were open Saturday, with most of the mall fenced off, as demolition has started. The project is being headed by Bill Edwards. In March he presented to the St. Petersburg City Council his vision for the future of Baywalk. As you walk into the complex now, Edwards said, it is like you are walking into a fortress. "It's uninviting," he said.  "We will be taking the box office out of there and opening it up," Edwards said at…

so stupid to bring in high end places to eat, why not something with affordable prices for families and seniors to eat for under $10 a meal, a Apple Store, a bakery, a coffee shop maybe a bike shop to further encourage bike riding instead of using a car. Why not a bookstore, a art gallery, a toy shop for kids, and why not just rebuild it instead of tearing it down. No more movies downtown ??? …   more ›

New American Theater Seeks a New Home

The planned construction for BayWalk has forced the theater company to start searching for a new home. New American Theater has been in St. Pete for two years.

On Thursday last week, Bill Edwards gave the St. Petersburg City Council a brief preview into his vision for the future of BayWalk. A partial demolition of BayWalk is set to begin within 30 days with construction of the entire project projected to finish in a year. The largely vacant facility is set to turn into a high-end retail and restaurant space, with nationally known merchants eyed for the spaces. The construction will displace the remaining holdouts in the largely vacant open air mall, including St. Petersburg’s New American Theater. After two years at BayWalk, the theater will soon vacate and will be looking for a new home. Last week, Tokyo Sushi, houses on the second floor, closed its doors for good, with no plans to re-open at …

BayWalk Vision Closer to Reality

On Thursday, Bill Edwards presented an updated plan for the renovations to the BayWalk complex in downtown St. Petersburg.

The day after Bill Edwards took over the BayWalk Complex in September 2011, renovations began immediately.  Buildings got a fresh coat of primer and paint. The entire complex was power washed and cleaned up. For Edwards, the complex needed curbside appeal if it were ever going to turn around.  Flash forward six months, Edwards stood before the St. Petersburg City Council presenting his vision of the future for BayWalk. Without revealing details, Edwards offered his vision for transforming the dormant retail complex through structural changes and an emphasis on shops. As you walk into the complex now, Edwards said, it is like you are walking into a fortress. "It's uninviting," he said.  "We will be taking the box office out of there and …
