St. Petersburg Is the Clear Winner in the Beef 'O' Brady's College Bowl at the Trop

The Cardinals come back to beat Southern Miss, but the nonstop pre-game activities were just as fun and allowed St. Pete to highlight what the city has to offer. Here are more photos from the events!

The five day festival known as the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl concluded last Tuesday night when the Louisville Cardinals defeated the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles, 31-28, at Tropicana Field. But for the city of St. Petersburg, the lingering effects from hosting thousands of fans and alumni may well be felt for years to come. The events leading up to the bowl were nearly as important to fans as the game itself. They allowed for St. Petersburg to show off the activities and climate that has lured visitors to the city for generations. A pre-game dance contest between the football teams also drew national attention when the players nearly game to blows over who had the better steps and rhythm. There were no clear winners, when state troopers …

Countdown to the Beef o' Brady's Bowl

The Golden Eagles Have Landed as Pre-Game Tailgating Party Starts in Downtown St. Pete

Fans and alumni of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles gather to celebrate their team outside the Tropicana stadium in St. Petersburg.

The music blared. Food and beverages were consumed at an alarming rate. Kickoff was hours away. But the real action was well under way, as tail-gaters celebrated outside the gates of the Trop, where the annual Beef o'Brady's Bowl was about to get started. While University of Louisville Cardinal fans clad in red dominated the Trop parking lot, the Southern Miss Golden Eagle supporters flocked to Ferg's bar across the street. A large contingent of the USM Alumni Association enjoyed the pre-game activities, fueled by wings and beer. Sgt. John Holland and his wife Mary from Philadelphia, Miss., said they came to downtown St. Petersburg to support their team and soak up the sights. "This area is beautiful," Mary raved.  Her husband, a handgun …

Battle of the Bands Sets Upbeat Tempo for Today's St. Pete Bowl Game

Cooler heads and warmer temps prevailed Monday, as the Louisville and Southern Miss boosters rallied prior to Tuesday's game at the Trop.

It's time to turn the page. There's nothing like a healthy dose of music, cheering and sunshine to take the edge off the intense rivalry that derailed a poolside dance contest Sunday between football players from the University of Louisville and Southern Miss. On Monday at the Battle of the Bands for the Beef o' Brady's Bowl Tuesday, things went much smoother. With the sun shining brightly and the school bands playing loudly to a large and boisterous crowd, the atmosphere was just what the doctors – a.k.a., event organizers – ordered following the acrimonious events of the previous day. "Everything went awesome, especially today. It's the most fans we ever had," said Katie Mulford, Marketing Project Coordinator for the Tradewinds Resort. …

St. Pete Beach Bash Ends After Tempers Flare Between Teams

During a poolside dance contest between Louisville and Southern Miss football players, banter got a little too heated, prompting State Troopers to show up and the party to end early.

Events leading to the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl are supposed to be fun-filled activities for the teams, their families and fans to participate in. The players and spectators relax before the big day and enjoy the sights and surroundings that come with being invited to a bowl game. Try telling that to the players from Louisville and Southern Mississippi. At the Beach Bash Sunday afternoon at the Tradewinds Island Resort in St. Pete Beach, hot tempers outweighed the cool temperatures as the event was halted prematurely when players from the competing teams nearly came to blows during a "friendly" poolside dance competition. "Someone said something disrespectful, did a little jawing after the dance contest… it's all good," said Louisville …
