Gualtieri, appointed interim sheriff in 2011, easily beat Democratic challenger Scott Swope in Tuesday's election.
Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri easily defeated challenger Scott Swope on Tuesday. With 299 of 299 Precincts Reporting, Gualtieiri won 59.24 percent to 40.45 percent. "It’s a great night and a culmination of 18 months of a lot of hard work by a lot of people." Gualtieri told a cheering crowd of more than 500 at the Hilton Carillon on Tuesday night. Gualtieri was appointed interim sheriff by Gov. Rick Scott in November 2011, after Jim Coats retired from the job. Democratic challenger for Pinellas County Sheriff Scott Swope thanked volunteers, supporters and friends at the VFW in Dunedin shortly after conceding to incumbent Bob Gualtieri in Tuesday's election. Swope called Gualtieri and left a message telling him to "do good for these next four years." Swope made the call after 85 percent of the vote was in favor of the incumbent. This is "the end of a 14-month journey that has been very, very strenuous, time consuming and expensive," he said. Candidates for Pinellas County School Board, County Commission and the Pinellas County Sheriff's race will be at a Meet the Candidates Forum at the Gulfport Casino Ballroom on Thursday, Sept. 20.

Bob Gualtieri fends off Everett RIce in the primary election to win a spot on the Republican ticket in November.
Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri fended off challenger and former sheriff Everett Rice in Tuesday's primary, picking up about 57 percent of the vote to Rice's 42 percent. He will face Democratic challenger Scott Swope and independent candidate Greg Pound in the November general election. StPetePolls releases its latest poll just a day before the Aug. 14 primary.
A day before the primary election, StPetePolls.org has released its latest poll showing Rep. Connie Mack, Sheriff Bob Gualtieri and Rep. Jeff Brandes pulling away in the polls. In the race for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, Mack leads the other candidates with 61.4 percent of the vote. The closest other candidate is Dave Weldon with 22.2 percent. According to the poll, the heated matchup between Gualtieri and former Sheriff Everett Rice is swinging Gualtieri's way, 59.4 percent to 40.6 percent. Pinellas County voters will go to the polls Tuesday for the Primary Election. The race between interim sheriff Bob Gualtieri and former sheriff Everett Rice is drawing local interest. The two veteran law enforcers are in a battle to be the GOP nominee for sheriff in November's general election. Rice, 67, was Pinellas sheriff from 1988 to 2004 prior to serving in the State Legislature and working as an attorney. He seeks to oust Gualtieri, appointed sheriff by Gov.
