Group Trying to Save Historic YMCA Building Sued by YMCA

The Historic YMCA said they believe the term 'Historic YMCA' is fair use.

A group seeking to save the Historic YMCA building in downtown St. Petersburg faces a lawsuit from the YMCA for using its name in marketing and fundraising materials. Tom Nestor, the man leading the charge to save the Historic YMCA and turn it into the St. Petersburg Rock and Roll Museum, told Patch that his group intends to fight the suit because they believe the term 'Historic YMCA' is fair use.  Since the name of the building itself is registered with the city as the Historic YMCA, Nestor asked if the YMCA would then sue the city, media and public officials who call it the Historic YMCA as well.  "We reached out to them and their response was to file (suit)," Nestor said of his contact with the YMCA. "There was no desire to meet with us…

LOL "DC" the only thing phony here is your late night comments - hiding behind two initials. Having a business plan for a project is pretty standard stuff and the one that you are quoting from has changed greatly since it's original draft. The local Y has been informed of our desires to acquire the property since "day one" and have expressed interest in moving their Corporate HQ back into the …   more ›

Will Video Save Y-Building From Demolition?

A documentary filmmaker is interviewing locals about their memories of the St. Pete YMCA.

The transformative power of art is being put to the test as a St. Petersburg filmmaker tries to rekindle the past at the old YMCA building in an effort to restore the 87-year-old building for future generations. Andrew Odell is interviewing St. Petersburg residents about activities and events at the YMCA, according to Bay News 9. Many of those locals spent a large part of their youth swimming and playing sports at the YMCA, which was built in 1926. Odell told Bay News 9: "Buildings are really the heart and life of a city," Odell said. "And when you bring the people, they are the blood. They are what flows. And if you take away the year, there’s nothing from the blood. So the way we're looking at it is if we can bring this building back to …

Good luck with your event today. It will be great to see the final results. A lot is going on downtown, with many things due to be completed near the same time in a couple years or so. I personally was against ''The Lens'' project, but it does not take a genius to see it is going to happen. Once construction begins I will fall in line and give it support. Although I hate to see The Pier gone, the…   more ›

Deadline Looms for Historic YMCA

The building's fate is at stake should $8,000 not be raised by the end of the day Monday.

UPDATE, Mon. Jan. 21: On Monday, the Historic YMCA received good news — and a check for $8,000. Tom Nestor confirmed the news to Patch.  "Angels do exist. And it seems Tampa Bay has more than a couple that are willing to help the cause in a big way to Save The Historic YMCA!," Nestor wrote on the Historic YMCA Facebook page. "... Transparency will be a common theme for our dedicated team as we continue to climb the mountain for this beloved building."  Earlier: Tom Nestor, the man leading the charge to save the Historic YMCA and turn it into the St. Petersburg Rock and Roll Museum, needs your help.  "I need to find an angel in the next three days," Nestor told Patch.  Should Nestor not be able to raise $8,000 by the end of the day Monday, …

Mr Nestor, and Mr Funkhowser. Excuse me for not knowing who you guys are. We don't know a lot of people here..virtually nobody except for our neighbors. Overall, though, I have been delighted with the people in the entire city no matter what walk of life they come from. This ''is'' a wonderful place to live with mostly great people. It is hard to believe how impressive everything across the board…   more ›

On Christmas Eve, the Historic YMCA will light up for the first time in more than a decade to honor lives lost and celebrate the holiday season.

In remembrance of lives lost and in celebration of the holiday season, the Historic YMCA will light up for the first time Monday night in more than a decade.  According to Tom Nestor, a local promoter hoping to turn the Historic YMCA into a rock museum and concert venue, the evening ceremony will be, "one of silent reflection and prayer for those across the nation who have recently fallen from the hands of others and a release of pain from all tragedies in our lives from 2012." The events on Christmas Eve begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Historic YMCA, located at 116 5th St. S. There will be three minutes of silence at 6:57 p.m. and at 7 p.m. lights will shine on the Historic YMCA.  "With so many recent events being traumatic in nature coupled …

Effort to Save Historic YMCA from Demolition Gets Good News

The applicant seeking to demolish the historic YMCA has asked the city for a month deferral.

The Historic YMCA is safe from demolition — at least for another month.  According to Peter Belmont, president of St. Petersburg Preservation, the applicant has asked the city to defer the demolition hearing until Dec. 14.  Belmont, St. Petersburg Preservation and a group of promoters looking to turn the YMCA building into the St. Petersburg Rock and Roll Museum have been collecting signatures and postcards to persuade the city not to demolish the building.  Although the hearing to consider the demolition of the YMCA building and clearing the site, which the Community Preservation Commission was slated hear Friday, has been delayed, Belmont is cautiously optimistic going forward.  "One can never be positive the building is safe until there…
