5 St. Pete Holiday Events You Won't Want to Miss

As Christmas draws near and the year comes to a close, we decided to pare down arts events to a Final 5 that are the best of the best.

From the "Holiday Pops" with the Florida Orchestra to First Night St. Pete, the end-of-the-year arts and entertainment selections are crowd-pleasers sure to both instill and evoke warm feelings and good cheer. Each of these major events is well worth the investment of time and ticket prices during a very busy season. 1.) The Florida Orchestra presents "Holiday Pops" at the Mahaffey Theater, Saturday, Dec. 11, at 8 p.m. Accompanied by the 110-voice Master Chorale of Tampa and Narrator Gavin MacLeod (a.k.a., TV's "Love Boat" Capt.),  the Orchestra will play Christmas carol sing-alongs, such as "Deck the Halls" and "Walking in a Winter Wonderland." St. Pete Offers Audiences Three 'Nutcracker' Ballets

The holiday perennial will be staged in three very different ballets. All tell the same classic coming-of-age story of a girl at Christmastime.

Like ornaments and carols, Christmas is not Christmas without "The Nutcracker." St. Petersburg has no less than three variations on the Nutcracker theme this holiday season. Each has a distinctive approach to the ballet classic. On Dec. 9-11, St. Petersburg's Academy of Ballet Arts performs the "The Nutcracker" at the esteemed Palladium Theater. This production is choreographed by  veteran Suzanne B. Pomerantzeff, a Bay-area institution after 40 years. She is a founder of the Academy, a nonprofit educational facility. This "Nutcracker" is mainly danced by students; here, one has the opportunity to view future greatness.
