ST. PETERSBURG – Left to die in a St. Petersburg canal, Lotus was rescued six months ago by a Good Samaritan who happened to spot the emaciated pup clinging to a piece of wood for dear life. The wood had been tied to a chain around her neck. Named Lotus, the young dog not only has made a remarkable recovery but made many friends along the way who have followed her rehabilitation and recovery at Pet Pal Animal Shelter in St. Petersburg. SPCA Tampa Bay sponsored a Pit Bull Awareness Day, which included contests and outreach from agencies dedicated to rescuing pit bulls and putting them in forever homes. The SPCA has about 20 pit bulls up for adoption.

Happy one-year anniversary, Simone! The white, pit bull mix is now the longest resident at Pet Pal, a no-kill animal shelter. But, please, don't feel bad for Simone, as she waits patiently for a forever home. Her previous life was marked by deprivation, sickness and abuse. Simone was found by Pet Pal Executive Director Scott Daly in South St. Petersburg last July. When driving to Pet Pal, Daly noticed a sickly dog stumbling through a vacant field. He quickly turned around to check her welfare and discovered a filthy, emaciated and severely dehydrated dog in desperate need of rescue. She possibly had just given birth to puppies.
