The problem with these cameras is how some police departments are mucking the matter with the yellow light duration. That is an easy fix. Do it because....aren't y'all tired of all these bloggers defending these people running red lights and putting themselves and others at risk? The citation from a red light ticket is far less severe than being ticketed by an officer on site (and where is the …   more ›

Drivers who want to appeal a ticket might have to pay up to $250 in additional fees if Gov. Rick Scott signs a new bill into law. Do you think that’s right?

What's Tampa Bay Saying?

$408 Red Light Camera Ticket: Is That Fair?

Drivers who want to appeal a ticket might have to pay up to $250 in additional fees if Gov. Rick Scott signs a new bill into law. Do you think that’s right?

Hate red light cameras? If so, you might hate them even more if Gov. Rick Scott signs a bill recently passed by the Florida Legislature into law. The bill sets a new process for appeals that enables local government bodies – cities and counties – to tack on an additional $250 in court fees for those who try to appeal tickets generated by red light cameras and fail. It also puts the new appeals process into the hands of those very same local governments that would benefit from the additional fees. That means motorists who appeal and lose will no longer be subject to just a $158 penalty – they might have to fork over $408. The new law, according to The Tampa Tribune, was designed to streamline the appeals process and put more control in the …

Gerdes Denies Interest in Mayor's Job

The St. Petersburg City Council member tells a Patch political blogger: 'Get off of the "Gerdes has his eye on being Mayor" schtick.'

St. Petersburg City Council member Charlie Gerdes is denying that he will make a run for the Mayor's Office. The attorney from West St. Petersburg issued a statement of sorts in the Comments section of the St. Petersburg Patch. He was taking to task Patch political blogger Gene "Doc" Webb, a regular observer of City Hall. "Please get off of the 'Gerdes has his eye on being Mayor' schtick," Gerdes wrote. "You started that before Gerdes was ever elected and you continue to spew it despite having been told face to face it is untrue." (For Gerdes' complete remark, please see Webb's blog post, "The Deputy City Attorney and the Red Light Cameras."  Gerdes' comments also caught the eye of Bay Buzz, in the Tampa Bay Times. Under the headline, '…

This is a weird kind of meta-journalism. You write some baseless junk; the person you write about calls you out on it. That scuffle gets picked up by a real newspaper. Then you write about the real newspaper's reporting on it. Well done, Mr. Kafka. Well done.   more ›

Red Light Cameras Survive City Council Vote

Despite one councilor's efforts to end the contract for the red light camera program in St. Pete, council voted to keep the 22 cameras at intersections in the city.

Following a heated debate, St. Petersburg City Council voted 5-3 Thursday to keep the red light camera program, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Councilor Wengay Newton made a motion to end the contract with American Traffic Solutions, the camera vendor, with Councilor Leslie Curran making a second, according to WTSP. "I think it's time for the council to invoke the only power we have," Newton said, according to the Times. The discussion came up after Mayor Bill Foster imposed a moratorium last week in response to Pinellas County Clerk of the Circuit Court Ken Burke's letter asking St. Petersburg and five other cities to stop writing tickets for red light violations, arguing there are flaws in the system and that his office is spending a …

Mayor Halts Red Light Camera Citations in St. Pete

St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster is imposing a moratorium on red light camera citations immediately in response to Pinellas County Clerk of Court Ken Burke's concerns about flaws in the system.

In response to Pinellas County Clerk of the Circuit Court Ken Burke's concerns regarding flaws with red light camera systems in St. Petersburg and five other Pinellas cities, Mayor Bill Foster has imposed a moratorium. Beginning immediately, the mayor has suspended issuing uniform traffic citations to persons identified in sworn affidavits submitted to the city within 30 days after the date of notification as having care, custody and control of the motor vehicle involved in the red light running citation, according to a press release. Last week, Pinellas County Clerk of the Circuit Court Ken Burke wrote a letter asking St. Petersburg and five other cities to stop writing tickets for red light violations, arguing there are flaws in the …

Integrity and fairness are not parts of ticket camera programs. Only $$$$ count. Call your state Representatives and Senators to tell them you want the use of red light cameras to stop. Call your local officials to tell them you are opposed to the cameras and want any existing cameras to be removed. Keep track of who supports or opposes the cameras and let it influence your future votes. James C…   more ›

Red Light Camera Company Fights Back Against Florida Critics

American Traffic Solutions, which provides red light traffic cameras for St. Pete and 70 other Florida municipalities, says court rulings are on their side.

The Arizona company that provides red light traffic cameras for St. Petersburg and more than 70 municipalities around Florida is fighting back against recent attacks on the legality of the technology and its use to catch violators. In a news release sent Wednesday, American Traffic Solutions points out five court rulings that have upheld the Mark Wandall Traffic Safety Act, which cleared the way for municipalities to use red light traffic cameras.  The company notes a Sarasota County case, State v. Nathan, in which the court ruled red light cameras do not "automatically deem a driver guilty of an infraction based on the issuance of a citation" and that the driver "is provided notice of a hearing and an opportunity to be heard." “These …
