Fed up with problems from RNC-provided buses, the Republican Party of Florida hired a charter bus company to transport its delegates.
The Republican Party of Florida is hoping delegates will have a smoother ride for the rest of the convention, now that the organization has chartered a bus company to provide transportation. On Tuesday, delegates were late to the opening day of the Republican National Convention because RNC-contracted buses were not sent to pick them up. Then the delegates were stuck on buses for hours Tuesday after the convention ended for the evening. "It was an absolute mess up," said Florida delegate Pat Fahey of Daytona Beach. Fahey did not arrive back to Palm Harbor's Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club until after 3 a.m. Wednesday. "Nobody knew where the buses were located when we came out of the convention. Everybody was sending us to a different place. …

Small business has been a major theme both inside and outside the Tampa Bay Times Forum this week.
Small business has been a major theme both inside and outside the Tampa Bay Times Forum this week. With events tied to the 2012 Republican National Convention taking place in all parts of the Tampa Bay area, many local business owners prepared to have the biggest money making week of their year. At the beginning of the convention, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn and the 2012 Tampa Host Committee projected a $150 – 175 million boost to Tampa’s economy because of the 2012 RNC. "The way the City (of Tampa) and the Downtown Partnership put it out, we'd have 50,000 visitors and we'd be swamped," said Marc Zolkowski earlier this week. Zolkowski is the co-owner of the Metro Lounge and Restaurant in downtown Tampa. His neighboring business owner, …
Few demonstrations have been held since the Republican National Convention began on Monday. It ends today.
Blame it on Monday's gloomy weather. Or the sizzle of the August heat after the sky cleared on Tuesday. Whatever the reason, protesters in downtown Tampa haven't shown up in droves as city officials expected during the Republican National Convention. Those who ventured away from Romneyville - a makeshift headquarters for protesters - toward the Tampa Convention Center have gathered in pockets at intersections, gripping Ron Paul signs or chanting in groups. Last night, protesters taunted officers by dangling doughnuts on sticks. Some, like Doug Marris, chose the lone wolf route. On Thursday morning, Marris, a 55-year-old U.S. Air Force veteran, held a white sign bearing a plethora of hand-written phrases and acronyms like "domestic spying" …

The storm’s size makes it a continued concern for the Tampa Bay area, forecasters say.
The latest projections call for Tropical Storm Isaac to move even further to the west of the Tampa Bay area, but forecasters at the National Weather Service are saying it’s still too early for the region to breathe a sigh of relief. “It’s a pretty big storm,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Ernie Jillson. “Tropical storm force winds are extending 180 miles to the northeast of the center.” With this in mind, Jillson said tropical storm warnings remain in effect for the entire Bay area, including Pasco, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota and Pinellas counties. A warning means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 36 hours. Isaac was 80 miles southeast of Key West when the National Hurricane Center released its …
While Isaac’s center will pass to the west of the region, forecasters are anticipating a storm surge of 3 to 5 feet.
It’s becoming less and less likely Tampa Bay will take a direct hit from Isaac as it makes its way north through the Gulf of Mexico. Even so, forecasters say the Bay area isn’t out of the danger zone just yet. The tropical storm, which is expected to reach hurricane strength sometime later today, is anticipated to bring a storm surge of 3 to 5 feet to the Tampa Bay area. It’s also likely Isaac will bring heavy rain, gusty winds and the potential for isolated tornados as it moves through the area. “Even though the center should be offshore, (we) should get several inches of rain,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Tyler Fleming. From Sarasota up to Pasco County, “across that whole area, 4 to 8 inches (of rain is possible) …

Monday's opening of the Republican National Convention in Tampa has been canceled, officials said.
The first day of the Republican National Convention in Tampa on Monday has been wiped out by the threat of Tropical Storm Isaac, the Tampa Bay Times reports. Officials announced the opening day's cancellation during a conference call Saturday, the Times reports. The newspaper posted the following statement from Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus on its website: "Due to the severe weather reports for the Tampa Bay area, the Republican National Convention will convene on Monday August 27th and immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, August 28th. After consulting with Governor (Rick) Scott, NOAA and local emergency management officials, we are optimistic that we will begin an exciting, robust convention that will …
