The break-in happend March 18 and was the second burglary at the home this year, according to St. Petersburg Police.
Images of two home burglary suspects were captured as they tried to destroy a security surveillance camera last month at a St. Petersburg home, according to police. The incident happened around 8:38 pm March 18 at a home located in the 2800 block of 28th Street North, St. Petersburg Police said. "The surveillance video captured images of the suspects as they started to break into the house via a rear window. After about 20 minutes the they apparently discover the surveillance camera and one suspect attempted to break it with a crowbar," said police spokesperson Mike Puetz in a news release. Police have arrested a suspect in the double homicide of an elderly man and his live-in girlfriend who were found dead Friday on a houseboat at a St. Petersburg marina, authorities said. Raynaldo Figueroa-Sanabria, 30, was stopped while driving a rental car in North Carolina and taken into custody, St. Petersburg Police said. In additional to first-degree murder warrants in the deaths of the victims, identified as John Joseph Travlos, 75, and Germana Morin, 74, Figueroa-Sanabria also had an outstanding warrant for trafficking in cocaine. Officials said they believe robbery may have been a possible motive in the deaths. The driver of the car was treated for minor injuries while the passenger died at the scene.
Two 16-year-old girls were riding in a 2008 Ford Escape in the 1300 block of 40th Avenue Northeast Friday night when the SUV lost control and crashed into the sidewalk and guardrails along the bridge to Shore Acres. Police said Alexia Douglas, the front side passenger of the vehicle, died upon impact. The 16-year-old driver was treated at All Children's Hospital for minor injuries and released, police said. According to police, the driver became distracted and stopped looking at the roadway just before 7 p.m. Friday. In that moment, the vehicle veered to the right, jumped the north curb and went up onto the sidewalk. A Clearwater man was arrested after authorities said he brought unregistered guns and ammunition onto the grounds of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, DC, on Sunday, according to a report from The Associated Press. Ty Carroll Mitchum, 29, was arrested by U.S. Capitol Police after they found him outside the building Sunday afternoon and searched his car. Manatee County authorities, working with the state, are seeking a former pharmacy store owner wanted since May 2012 in connection to a drug trafficking operation. Investigators accuse Ajay Patel of filling prescriptions for Oxycodone for a drug trafficking operation. Patel operated pharmacies on Longboat Key, Parrish and Bradenton. Police say it is important for car owners to not leave their keys in the car.
Since January, the St. Petersburg Police Department has investigated 248 auto thefts. According to police, in those cases 161 of the victims left their keys in the ignition; and in some cases, the engine running, as well. In Florida, 25 percent of stolen vehicles had the keys in them, police said St. Pete Police have released some tips to help protect your car. The two victims were found on a houseboat moored at the Loggerhead Marina; it does not appear to be a murder-suicide, police said.
Updated, 2:36 p.m.: Homicide detectives say they do not believe this appears to be a case of murder-suicide, based on their preliminary examination of the crime scene, but that it could be at least several more hours before they have any updates on the two victims' identities, their relationship, precise manner of death or a possible motive. The St. Petersburg Police Department collected double the amount of weapons during the six-week program it would usually collect during the same timeframe.
Sawed off shotguns, 100-round magazines, a 50-calliber handgun and a 20-round shotgun magazine represent just a sliver of the 80 guns taken from criminals in St. Petersburg during a six-week gun bounty program. Monday, St. Petersburg Police Chief Chuck Harmon held a press conference at the police headquarters to share the success of the initiative. “Every gun here was taken from a criminal. This was in the community of St. Petersburg,” Harmon said pointing to a table of assault weapons and fully automatic weapons. “It’s out there and unfortunately too prevalent in our community.” In total, since Feb. 28 the department collected 120 firearms, 24 pellet/bb guns, 4,123 rounds of ammunition and the seizure of nearly $74,000.
